Period 2: Grammar—Present perfect progressive tense Objectives

To learn to use understand and use present perfect progressive tense

Procedures

▇ Learning about present perfect progressive The Present Perfect Progressive ●Usage

The present perfect progressive:

1. shows that an event, activity or situation that began recently, or in the past, and continues to the present.

"Colin has been raking the leaves for hours." 2. can be used to describe an event, activity or situation that began in the past and ended only a short time ago.

"John has been playing the guitar all morning, and now his fingers hurt." 3. is often used to answer the questions "How long?" or "Since when?"

"I have been teaching English since 1963." "Paul has been speaking English for five years." Some verbs are not used in the present perfect progressive tense. These are the stative verbs that do not describe motion or activity:

be / have (possess) / hear / know / like / love / prefer / recognize / see / suppose / understand / want / wish These verbs are used in the present perfect simple, not the progressive.

"Joey has known Janice since 1989." (not "has been knowing") The present perfect progressive tense answers the questions "How long?" and "Since when?", but not "How many/much?" For these, we use the present perfect simple.

"Bob has been playing chess three times a week since 1987." "Bob has played chess three times this week." (not "has been playing") 优课轩资源网http://www.enteach.net未经授权

●Structure

The general rule for construction of the present perfect progressive tense is:

has/have + been + verb + -ing

"The dog has been chasing the mailman." In negative statements, not is put immediately after has/have and before been.

"Mrs. Thompson has not been teaching for very long." In questions, the subject and has/have change places. Statement: "The two boys have been looking for the lost ring."

Question: "Have the two boys been looking for the lost ring? Present perfect progressive tense

describes an action that began in the past, continues in the present, and may continue into the future. This tense is formed by using has/have been and the present participle of the verb (the verb form ending in -ing). The CEO has been considering a transfer to the state of Texas where profits would be larger. ■Making sentences with the present perfect progressive tense To build up your learning of the present perfect progressive tense, we are going to try to make out of the text as many sentences with present perfect progressive tense as possible. 1.
