Hello, class. Look at this photo. What is it? Wang Lin, could you tell the class something about this photo? It is the photo of Dolly the sheep (1996-2003). Dolly the sheep became a scientific sensation when her birth was announced in 1997. Her relatively early death in February 2003 fuels the debate about the ethics of cloning research and the long-term health of clones. What is it about Dolly that is so special? How was she created? And did she die young because she was a clone?

That is what we are going to learn this week. Cloning! This is the topic this week!

What is “Cloning”?

Cloning is the process of creating an identical copy of an original. A clone in the biological sense,

"I wish I had not done this terrible thing, I wish I was dead!”

therefore, is a single cell (like bacteria, lymphocytes etc.) or multi-cellular organism that is genetically identical to another living organism. Sometimes this can refer to "natural" clones made either when an organism reproduces asexually or when two genetically identical individuals are produced by accident (as with identical twins), but in common parlance the clone is an identical copy by some conscious design. Also see clone (genetics).

The term clone is derived from κλων, the Greek word for "twig". In horticulture, the spelling clon was used until the twentieth century; the final e came into use to indicate the vowel is a "long o" instead of a "short o". Since the term entered the popular lexicon in a more general context, the spelling clone has been used exclusively. ■

Reading to get background information Now go to page 41 to read the short paragraph about the film Frankenstein. While reading try to cut/ the sentences into thought groups, blacken the predicates, underline the useful expressions and darken the connectives. In 1816, a nineteen-year-old Englishwoman/ called/ Mary Shelley/ wrote a novel/ called/

Frankenstein. It told the story of a scientist/ who created a monster/ that resembled a huge human being. The novel immediately became very popular/ and it is generally agreed that/ it is one of the best science fiction stories/ ever written. Several films/ on it/ have been made.Boris Karloff played the monster/ in the 1931 film Frankenstein, as shown/ in the picture/ on this page. For the film, he is made/ to look very ugly, with wrinkled skin, yellow eyes and black lips. The monster is

very big/ and very strong, and this makes him very frightening. He terrifies everyone/ who sees

him. The 1931 film is still the most famous of all horror films. Now you have read this paragraph, try to copy all the useful expressions into your Expression Book and make your own sentences with them. a nineteen-year-old Englishwoman, write a novel called …, tell the story of a scientist, create a monster, resemble a huge human being, become very popular, it is generally agreed that…, one of the best science fiction stories ever written, films on…, play the monster, in the 1931 film …, as shown in the picture, on this page, look very ugly, with wrinkled skin, terrify…, the most famous of all horror films ▇Before you read We shall go on to read the text on page 42. But before that please go over the word list for this module, paying attention to the pronunciation of the word, the relationship between its pronunciation and its spelling. ▇While you read Now open your book to page 42 to read the text and cut/ the sentences into thought groups, blacken the predicates, underline the useful expressions and darken the connectives at the same

time. Frankenstein's Monster Part 1 The story of Frankenstein Frankenstein is a young scientist/ from Geneva, in Switzerland. While studying at university, he discovers

the secret of how to give life/ to lifeless matter. Using bones from dead bodies, he creates

a creature/ that resembles

a human being/ and gives

it life. The creature, which is

unusually large/ and strong, is extremely ugly, and terrifies all those/ who see it. However, the monster, who has learnt to speak, is intelligent/ and has human emotions. Lonely and unhappy, he begins to hate his creator, Frankenstein. When Frankenstein refuses to create a wife/ for him, the monster murders

Frankenstein's brother, his best friend Clerval, and finally, Frankenstein's wife Elizabeth. The scientist chases the creature/ to the Arctic/ in order to destroy him, but he dies

there. At the end of the story, the monster disappears into the ice/ and snow/ to end his own life. Part 2 Extract from Frankenstein It was on a cold November night/ that I saw my creation/ for the first time. Feeling very anxious, I prepared the equipment/ that would give life/ to the thing/ that lay at my feet. It was already one/ in the morning/ and the rain/ fell against the window. My candle was almost burnt out when, by its tiny light,I saw the yellow eye of the creature open. It breathed hard, and moved its arms and legs. How can I describe my emotions/ when I saw this happen? How can I describe the monster who I had worked/ so hard/ to create? I had tried to make him beautiful. Beautiful! He was the ugliest thing/ I had ever seen! You could see the veins/ beneath his yellow skin. His hair was black/ and his teeth were

white. But these things contrasted

horribly with his yellow eyes, his wrinkled yellow skin and black lips. I had worked/ for nearly two years/ with one aim only, to give life to a lifeless body. For this/ I had not slept, I had destroyed my health. I had wanted it more than anything/ in the world. But now/ I had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and horror and disgust/ filled my heart. Now/ my only thoughts were, "I wish I had not created this creature, I wish I was on the other side of the world, I wish I could disappear!” When he turned to look at me, I felt unable to stay in the same room as him. I rushed out, and /for a long time/ I walked up and down my bedroom. At last/ I threw

myself on the bed/ in my clothes, trying to find a few moments of sleep. But although I slept, I had terrible dreams. I dreamt I saw my fiancée/ walking in the streets of our town. She looked well/ and happy/ but as I kissed her lips, they became pale, as if she were dead. Her face changed and I thought/ I held the body of my dead mother/ in my arms. I woke, shaking with fear. At that same moment,I saw the creature/ that I had created. He was standing/ by my bed/ and watching me. His mouth opened/ and he made a sound, then seemed to smile. I think/ he wanted to speak, but I did not hear. He put out a hand, as if he wanted to keep me/ there, but/ I ran out of the room. I hid in the garden/ and stayed there/ till morning, terrified/ by what I had done. Again and again/ I thought, "I wish/ I had not done this terrible thing, I wish/ I was

dead!”

You cannot imagine the horror of that face! I had seen him/ when he was unfinished--- he was

ugly then. But when he stood up/ and moved. He became a creature /from my worst nightmares. ▇After you read Copy all the useful expressions into your Expression Book and make your own sentences with them.

Closing down by talking about cloning in fiction To end this period we shall watch a TV program telling about cloning in fiction.

Cloning has been widely explored in science-fiction.

●Star Wars (film series): A race of aliens called Kaminoans use an accelerated cloning technique to create an army of over a million human soldiers that participate in a galaxy-wide conflict known as the Clone Wars.

●The Boys From Brazil (novel and film adaptation)

●Brave New World: the population is grown. The lower castes are cloned from a single egg (Bokanofskyfied).

●The 6th Day: a film whose main themes are clones (such as the protagonist 'being' one) and branching ethical cloning problems.

●The Island: another film about the ethics of cloning. Follows the story of clones grown in a secret complex for the sole purpose of killing them and using their organs as replacements for their original versions in the real world, all while being convinced they are living purposeful lives.

●Jurassic Park:cloning of dinosaurs by the use of prehistoric insects that sucked their blood.(DNA cloning of the blood)

●The House of the Scorpion:young adult novel following the life of a clone named Matteo Alacran.

●Metal Gear Solid

●"The Clone" by H.G.Wells

●"Cloning": Novel by David Shear, first published in 1972, about a man who discovers he is a clone. His mind and body are taken over by the psyche of his genetic twin whom he never knew and died a violent death.

●"Godsend"

8.

My candle was almost burnt out when, by its tiny light,I saw the yellow eye of the creature open. 我的蜡烛即将燃尽熄灭,微弱的烛光下,我看到我创造的杰作黄色的眼睛睁开了。

"感觉"的动词see, hear, watch, notice, observe, feel 等和三个表示"致使"的动词make, have, let 后面跟不带to的不定式作补语。例如: to see sb. go out ,to hear sb come in,to make sb laugh,to have sb explain it,to let sb go out 9.

I hid in the garden and stayed there till morning, terrified by what I had done. 我躲藏在花园里面直到凌晨到来,我为自己的所作所为感到恐惧。句中terrified到句号是过去分词短语,作状语,表示方法或活动方式,如:

He walked up and down, lost

in thought. I sat before the desk until after mid-night, absorbed in writing. Surrounded by a host of fans, the film star left the airport excitedly. 10.

"I wish I had not done this terrible thing, I wish I was dead!”“我要没有做这件可怕的事就好了,我死了多好!”

用于wish后面的从句,表示与事实相反的情况,或表示将来不太可能实现的愿望。I wish I were as tall as you.我希望和你一样高。He wished he hadn't said that. 他希望他没讲那样的话。I wish it would rain tomorrow. 我希望明天下雨就好了。
