II. Reading Practice Passage one 【1】Are you on Facebook almost every hour of the day? Do you think about being on Facebook even when you are not? If so, you’re suffering from Facebook
addiction. Just like any other type of addiction, it can be harmful to a person’s overall life. Then, how to overcome it. 【2】Admit your addiction to Facebook. Admission is the first step with any addiction. If not, then you can’t be helped. Ask yourself these questions: Are you on Facebook at least every hour? Do you wake up in the middle of the night with the desire to check your Facebook page? Does Facebook interfere with your job performance, family life or daily routine? If you said “yes” to most of these questions, then you could be addicted to Facebook. 【3】List the consequences for using Facebook. Many people don’t realize what negative impact Facebook has on their lives until they make a list. Think about what Facebook addiction is doing to your job, family environment and your overall life and list them all, which helps bring about awareness on what it is really doing to their lives. 【4】Cancel your Facebook account. Go under the help section on Facebook and email customer service letting them get your account cancelled. For some people this is enough
to help them overcome their addiction, but some others may end up turning to some other social networking websites, say, MySpace. In that case, you need to cancel Internet access together. 【5】Seek a professional therapist. Recovering from any addiction can be difficult. Find a therapist specializing in addiction, even better yet someone who is families with Facebook addition. The therapist will help you understand where your Facebook addiction stems from and what you can further do to recover from it.
【6】Don’ t allow your addiction to Facebook to continue taking over your life and take action today. 1.

_________________________________________________________ Passage Two 【1】When a rather dirty, poorly dressed person kneels at our feet and puts out his hands to beg for a few coins, do you hurry on, not knowing what to do, or do you feel sad and hurriedly hand over some money?
What should your attitude to beggars be?
There can be no question that the world is full of terribly sad stories.
It must be terrible to have no idea where our next meal is going to come from.
It seems cruel not to give some money to beggars. 【2】Certainly, most of the world’s great religions order us to be open-hearted and share what we have with those less fortunate than ourselves.
But has the world changed?
Maybe what was morally right in the old days, when one know exactly who in the village had suffered misfortune and needed help, is no longer the best idea. Quite a few people will not give to beggars.
Let us look at their arguments. 【3】First, some believe that many city beggars dress up on purpose to look pitiable and actually make a good living form begging.
Giving to beggars only encourages this sort of evil.
Secondly, there is the worry that the money you give will be spent on beer, wine or drugs.
Thirdly, there is the opinion that there is no real excuse for begging.
One might be poor, but that is no reason for losing one’s sense of pride and self-dependence. 【4】Related to this is the opinion that the problem should be dealt with by the government rather than ordinary people.
Some people think beggars should go to the local government department and receive help. 【5】It is hard to come to any final conclusion; there are various cases and we must deal with them differently.
A few coins can save a life in some situations, and even if the money is wasted, that does not take away the moral goodness of the giver.

_________________________________________________________ Passage Three 【1】Christmas was just a week away and I had five people left to shop for but only three dollars. “Let's set a price limit on our gifts this year.” I suggested to my best friend Joanie. “That’s a good idea,” Joanie agreed. “How about nothing over five dollars?”
“How about sixty cents?” I felt like the biggest cheapskate in the world. “I guess this is where I’m supposed to say: it’s not the gift but the thought that counts,” Joanie smiled. 【2】It is almost impossible to buy anything under sixty cents, so it was really going to have to be very small gifts with very big thoughts. 【3】Finally, Christmas Day arrived. I gave my mother a candle with a note that said, “You are the brightest light in my life.” She almost cried when she read the note.
【4】I gave my brother a wooden ruler. On the back of it I had painted, “No brother in the world could measure up to you.” He gave me a bag of sugar and had written on it, “You’re sweet sister.”
【5】For Joanie , I painted a pair of shoes with a note that said, “No one could ever fill your shoes .” She thanked me and said I always tickled (使……高兴) her and made her laugh. 【6】To my other two friends, I gave Annie a paper fan and a note on it, “I’m your biggest fan.” I gave Helen a calculator that cost one dollar and I painted a message on the back, “You can always count on me.”
【7】My mother knows she is the most important person in my life. My brother thinks I’m sweet. Joanie thinks I’m funny and make her laugh, which is important because her dad moved away last year and she missed him and is sad sometimes …
