A
When Mrs. Delgado asked her daughter Sonia to bring blueberry muffins (松饼) to a sick neighbor, Sonia said sure. But when Sonia found out who the neighbor was, she was not so sure.
The neighbor's name was Mrs. Craverham, and kids in the neighborhood said she was the most unkind person who ever lived.
Sonia
walked
up
the path to
Mrs.
Craverham's.
She did not like the idea of abandoning anyone being sick and alone, but what if the kids were right? A girl in Sonia's science class said that Mrs. Craverham had poked (戳) her with a stick last Halloween. Sometimes there were loud noises heard coming from inside.
And a boy in Sonia's math class said Mrs.
Craverham had hung him upside down and painted him yellow when he accidentally kicked a soccer ball into her yard.
Torn between (左右为难) wanting to help someone in need and not wanting to come home a different color, Sonia decided to be brave.
Finally Sonia knocked on the door.
After a few moments, Mrs.
Craverham answered the door and asked with impatience, “Who are you? What are you doing here?”
Sonia said, “My mother heard you were ill. She cooked muffins for you.”
Mrs. Craverham relaxed.“My, that's sweet.
I'm sorry if I seemed impolite, but young people sometimes dare each other to come to my door because they think I'm going to do something to them. As soon as I answer the door, they run off and laugh loudly.”
Suddenly, Sonia heard a loud cry. Mrs. Craverham laughed as Sonia jumped.“Oh, that's just Norbert, my parrot (鹦鹉). He's watched too many violent movies — like you, I think!”
1.According to Paragraph 1, Sonia ________.
A.liked blueberry muffins B.was afraid of Mrs.
Craverham C.knew her sick neighbor very well D.was the meanest kid in the neighborhood 解析:选B
由该段中的“she was not so sure”和“Mrs. Craverham ...the most unkind person who ever lived”可知,当Sonia得知这位生病的邻居是Craverham太太时,她有些害怕了。
2.Why did Mrs. Craverham answer the door impatiently? A.She thought it was something unpleasant again.
B.She was tired of meeting visitors.
C.She hated to see Sonia again.
D.She was terribly sick.
解析:选A
由倒数第二段中的“young people sometimes dare each other ...they run off and laugh loudly”可知,Craverham太太之所以不耐烦是因为她以为又是哪个孩子在搞恶作剧,故选A项。
3.What will Mrs. Craverham probably do next? A.Paint Sonia yellow.
B.Give her parrot to Sonia.
C.Accept Sonia's offerings.
D.Hang Sonia upside down.
由文中Sonia所说的“My mother heard you were ill. She cooked muffins for you.”和Craverham太太所说的“My, that's sweet.”

We believe that there is more to education than preparation for a job.
Children must be prepared for all aspects (方面) of their future work, personal relationships, creative activities, dealing with money matters, independence, and parenthood.
But it would be unrealistic (不现实的) to provide an education which took no consideration of the needs of employers. What type of training does the business world regard as important? Many young people applying for jobs were,in the employers'
opinions, very weak in the basic skills of
handwriting, grammar and spelling.“Though
additional education at university level improved the students' general ability,”
a report states, “in basic skills the standards remained stubbornly low.”
There are different opinions about whether standards have gone down in recent years. What is certain is that employers do not believe the standards are now high enough. Do technological changes make greater demands upon the students' abilities? We should also remember that the job expectations of young people have increased. Girls who would have once become shop assistants or hairdressers now want to be secretaries. Boys who sought an apprenticeship (学徒工作) 20 years ago now desire to have an engineering degree.
But it is
still the same girls and boys with the same degree of ability.
No wonder there are problems in reaching the“necessary standards”
of the business world.
Many employers believe that it is important for teachers to have experience outside the world of college and school. They should work for a while at some other kinds of job “to see how the world of business is different from their own”. The teaching occupation and society in general need a greater understanding of manpower needs and therefore of “the desired”
direction of the education system.
4.The article mainly talks about ________.
A.no education among young people
B.meeting the educational requirements of employment C.the problem of unemployment D.the weaker standards of education 解析:选B
5.In the writer's opinion, education should ________.
A.pay more attention to students' academic ability B.only meet the needs of employment C.be suitable to all aspects of being an adult, including employment D.center on grammar 解析:选C
6.The underlined part “the same girls and boys”
in Paragraph 6 refers to ________.
A.those who are likely to be unemployed B.those who have just left middle school C.those who are looking for jobs far beyond their abilities D.those who might have become shop assistants, hairdressers and apprentices in the past 解析:选D
因此,“the same girls and boys”指那些在过去会成为售货员、理发师和学徒的人。
7.It's suggested that teachers should ________.
A.never change their jobs B.improve their teaching methods C.spend more time on their school work D.get some work experience outside school 解析:选D
C
It all started a few years ago in the quiet village of Mollington after a number of burglaries (盗窃). Those living in the village came up with the idea that they themselves could keep an eye on their neighbours' property (财产) while they were away on holiday. Since then, with the help
of the government and police, more than 50,000 “Neighbourhood Watch”
schemes (项目) have been set up in the UK.
The object of each “Watch”
group is to prevent things like this from happening again in any street or area. Each villager who is a member of the scheme agrees to do their best to stop anyone
stealing
something
in the village. Everything is done calmly and carefully — it is the police who check out each report and find out what is happening. Villagers who are part of the group are not supposed to act as police or put themselves in any danger.
When a new “Neighbourhood Watch”
scheme is set up in an area, the first thing people notice
is the large, brightly
coloured “Neighbourhood Watch”
board. This is a real warning to most burglars, because very few of them will take
a chance of breaking into someone's house if they know that there is a high risk of being seen by neighbours keeping a lookout. Burglars also know that people who are part of the “Neighbourhood Watch”
schemes are more likely to have fitted good locks to their doors and windows.
Since the “Neighbourhood Watch”
scheme was set up, there are fewer burglaries and there is a new community spirit. It is bringing people together as never before, and encouraging people to care for each other. New friendships are also being made.
8.The “Neighbourhood Watch”
scheme in Mollington was started ________.
A.as the first of its kind in the UK B.after 50,000 burglaries in the area C.because the police were short of hands D.because it was a popular holiday centre 解析:选A
由第一段中的“Since then ...more than 50,000 ‘Neighbourhood Watch’ schemes (项目) have been set up in the UK.”
9.The job for members of a “Watch”
group is to ________.
A.do their best to catch burglars B.ask strangers to leave at once C.help those who are in trouble D.report a burglary to the police 解析:选D
由第二段中的“it is the police who check out each report ...put themselves in any danger”可知,该项目成员的主要工作就是将发现的情况及时上报,由警方来处理,故选D项。
10.What does the author think of the scheme? A.He doubts it.
C.It is successful.
B.It is worrying.
D.He is uncertain about it.
由最后一段中的“fewer burglaries”,“a new community spirit”和“New friendships are also being made.”
11.What's the purpose of the text? A.To advise.
C.To educate.
B.To discuss.
D.To introduce.
Schools across the United States are trying to achieve a waste-free lunch period. Still using brown paper to take lunch? Bag them, they say.__1__ To meet eco-friendly (环保的) lunch requirements, sandwiches and snacks need to be put in plastic containers (容器) and water must be in a reusable bottle.
The schools'
view: more students using eco-friendly lunch containers means less waste created at lunchtime. __2__ A green lunch rule is also good for schools since they will require less clean-up and there will be less cost for taking out the trash.
__3__ They say that reusable containers are expensive and washing the containers also uses water. Schools say that the containers don't need to be thrown away. In the long run, the cost should be less than buying paper lunch bags, if students don't lose or misplace their containers.
__4__ Although some parents are against this rule, it seems many families are trying to go green.
__5__ Sales of plastic and paper bags, once school lunch must-haves (必须品), are dropping.
What do you think? Is the added time and money in going green at lunchtime worth it? Should schools require kids to bring eco-friendly lunches? A.That's good for the planet.
B.They say it's no use doing so.
C.Some parents agree to the school's suggestion.
D.Parents say kids are certain to lose the containers.
E.Sales of eco-friendly lunch products are on the rise.
F.Schools are asking students to choose reusable cloth bags.
G.But there are more problems to consider, say some parents.
1.选F
根据该空前的“Bag them”和该空后的“sandwiches and snacks need to be put in plastic containers (容器) and water must be in a reusable bottle”可知,F项“学校要求学生选用环保的布袋子”符合语境。
2.选A
A项中的“That's good for”与该空后的“is also good for”相呼应。
该空后的“They say”承接G项中的“say some parents”,故选G项。
4.选D
D项中的“kids are certain to lose the containers”与该空前的“if students don't lose or misplace their containers”相呼应。
5.选E
E项中的“Sales of ...are on the rise”与该空后的“Sales of ...are dropping”形成对比。
