Mini-Grammar: Subjunctive Mood in If- clauses Teaching objectives

Knowledge and skills objectives: 1.

To help the students to learn the structures and usages of the Subjunctive Mood in “if” clause. 2. To enable students to use the grammar properly by practicing. Process and method objectives:

Improve the students’ ability to use the English language.

Emotional and value objectives:

Arouse their interests in learning grammar.

Teaching important points: 1.

Help the students master the structures about the subjunctive mood in “if” clause.

2.

Guide the students to practice the grammar in different situations. Teaching difficult point: Practice the grammar in different situations. Teaching methods: Task-based teaching, cooperative learning Teaching aids: The multimedia, ppt, blackboard Teaching Procedures Step 1. Lead-in

1.

Enjoy an English song. Look at the four sentences from the song, read them together and pay attention to the verb tenses. Tell the students: They’re unreal conditionals, a kind of the subjunctive mood. 2.

Find out the differences between the two sentences. If I am free, I will visit you. If I were a bird, I would fly into the sky. We can find that : when we talk about a fact, we say If I am… I will….

But when we talk about an imaginary situation or something unreal, we say If I were… I would…. That’s what we call subjunctive mood. Definition: Subjunctive mood is usually used to talk about the situations that are not true or not likely to become true. Step 2. Presentation

Give students some examples and lead them to generalize the rules for unreal conditionals. (1)

If sb. did/were sth, I would/could/might do sth. (2)

If sb. had done sth, I would/could/might have done sth. (3)

If sb.were to do/should do/did sth, sb would/might/could do sth. Step 3. Practice 1.

Do some exercises about the subjunctive mood. 2 .Enjoy a short video from an old film:Titanic Then do sentence-making and blank-filling exercises

according to this

movie to consolidate what they have learned. Step 4. Introduce 3 other forms of if-conditional (1)

If –conditional without “IF”:When ‘were’,‘should’ or ‘had’

appear in IF-Clause, “If” can be omitted, and then place “ ‘were’,‘should’ or ‘had’ ”in the front of the sentence, forming the Inverted Sentence eventually. Examples: ①If I were you, I would not let her go. →Were I you, I would not let her go. ②If they had helped us, we would not have failed it. →Had they helped us, we would not have failed it. ③If they should come tomorrow, they would finish it. →Should they come tomorrow, they would finish it. (2)

Mixed Conditional:The ‘time’ of the action in If- clause does not agree with that in main Clause. Examples: ①If you had followed my advice just now, you would be better now. ②If you had studied hard before, you would be a college student now. (3)

Implied conditional:Some if--clauses can be substituted by the following phrases: but for,but that, without, supposing, otherwise (or else)…

Examples:

①Without your help, I wouldn’t have passed the exam.

=If you hadn’t helped me, I wouldn’t have passed the exam.

②She was ill, otherwise she would have been present at the meeting. =If she had not been ill, she would have been present at the meeting. Step 5. Do multiply choices. Step6. Homework 1. Review the structures of the subjunctive mood in “if” clause and the usage of them in different situations. 2. Finish the exercises on the learning material.
