Introduction
Show students some phrases and pictures and brainstorm. Talk about the history of rockets. Rockets 1.
Today’s rockets have their roots in the science and technology of the past. 2.
Just when the first true rockets appeared is unclear. Perhaps the first true rockets were accidents. In the first century A.D., to create explosions during religious festivals, the Chinese filled bamboo tubes with gunpowder and tossed them into fires. Perhaps some of those tubes failed to explode and instead skittered out of the fires, propelled by the gases produced by the burning gunpowder. 3.
The Chinese began experimenting with the gunpowder-filled tubes. At some point, they attached bamboo tubes to arrows and launched them with bows. Soon they discovered that these gunpowder tubes could launch themselves just by the power produced from the escaping gas. The true rocket was born. 4.
The date reporting the first use of true rockets was in 1232. At this time, the Chinese and the Mongols were at war with each other. During the battle of Kai-Keng, the Chinese repelled the Mongol invaders by a barrage of "arrows of flying fire."
II.
Read the first paragraph of the passage. Q: Which example is used to illustrate that Chinese people have always dreamt of flying to space?
Q: Can you describe his idea? (To make the story more interesting, add more details.) Q: What happened to him at last? According to the people watching him at that time? According to present people?

III. Word study
IV. Production 1.
China launched its first lunar probe, Chang'e-1, in October 2007, marking a milestone in the country's space exploration. China launched its second unmanned lunar probe, Chang'e-2 on October 1, 2010. Encourage students to look back into history and have a better knowledge of milestones in China’s space exploration. 2.
Read the news items to the students:
Shenzhou V was launched on October 15, 2003, carrying one astronaut, Yang Liwei, on a 21.5-hour flight. This made China the third country to send a lone human into orbit, after Russia and the United States.
Shenzhou VI was launched on October 12, 2005, carrying two men, Fei Junlong and Nie Haisheng, on a five-day flight 210 miles above the Earth.
Shenzhou VII was launched on September 25, 2008, carrying three men, Zhai Zhigang, Liu Boming and Jing Haipeng.
3.
Group discussion:
Do you have the ambition to become an astronaut?
What further progress will China make in manned space flights?
