Meanwhile, they can also learn to talk about their own preference by describing restaurants from various aspects.
Students might have difficulty in:
1.
understanding the meaning of some words and sentences in the text;
2.
expressing their own preference and reasons.

“Good” 或者
Taste of home
[1] “Fancy” is probably not the word to describe the Lounge Cafe, a small restaurant in London run by two friends, Zina Manda and Maria Kuehn. In a city that’s full of Michelin-star restaurants –
which can be way fancier with their exotic ingredients and delicate plate arrangements –
the Lounge Cafe made an impression by having a “homely spirit”, according to reporter Paula Rincon. “The food was served as one’s mum would [serve it],” she wrote on The Independent. “The point was not to be photogenic, but to be tasty.”
[2] It’s probably this sense of intimacy (亲切) that allowed the Lounge Cafe to beat off dozens of high-end chain restaurants to become London’s highest-rated restaurant on travel website TripAdvisor earlier this month.
[3] “Independent restaurants can do things a bit differently. They don’t have to follow a formula (既定准则),” Clarrie O’Callaghan, owner of The Rattle Owl restaurant in York, England, told the Yorkshire Post. “They have a strong identity.”
[4] It’s true that people today have a growing preference for “independents” over “chains”. And it’s not just about restaurants.
[5] Personally, I prefer independent films over franchise-type (大片制作的) ones. With the latter, it’s always a precise proportion (比例) of romance, thrill, twist (情节反转) and sadness, plus an attractive lead actress. With the former, you don’t know what you’re expecting but what you do know is that you’re not walking into yet another Marvel world. Of course, independent productions aren’t always great, but to me, being disappointing is much better than being predictable.
[6] It’s also true with music. My playlists are full of independent bands that are hardly heard of, instead of pop singers like Katy Perry and Justin Bieber. Only in this way can I build an intimate relationship with my music. After all, it’s hard to connect to a song when it’s designed to cater (迎合) for everyone and is played in every shopping mall.
[7] It’s just like how Rincon described the Lounge Cafe when she first went there.
[8] “A regular client suddenly popped in and ordered a coffee. Zina playfully said ‘White, two sugars!’ as they laughed. They did not seem like customer and owner – they all called each other by their names and greeted each other like old friends,” she wrote. “As the word ‘fancy’ left my mind, 4
‘originality’ came up – something increasingly hard to find in London, where we always bump into the same food chains.”
[9] Perhaps it’s this need to feel like an individual and be treated differently that drives us to break free from the “chains” of big restaurants and seek out something more down to earth.
