Q3: How many kinds of animals are mentioned in the article?

Task 2: scanning--scan the passage and see whether these statements are true or false 1. Hibernation often occurs in autumn. 2. The absence of food is one of the reasons for animals’ hibernation.

Supplementary material for students While some animals hibernate during the cold winter months, others migrate(迁移) to warmer climates. Migrating animals include many species of birds and whales, certain butterflies, and some species of deer.

In the case of some animals, local weather conditions and lack of food can decide when or if they migrate. For example, some deer may migrate from mountain ranges to lowlands or from northern area to southern regions simply in search of food. If there is a mild winter or enough food near the places where they live, they may not migrate.

On the other hand, the migration of many species of birds is decided not by weather or the sources of food, but by the length of day. As the days become shorter they will fly to warmer climates, and as the days become longer they will fly to cooler climates. In the northern hemisphere(半球), not all bird migration is from north to south. For example, some birds in Europe migrate from Eastern Europe, which has cold winters, to the British Isles, which have more moderate temperatures. Since some animals may migrate thousands of kilometers every year, they use a variety of methods to find their way. Most migrating animals appear to use geographical features(地理特征) to find the position. However, the position of the sun and stars seems to play a part in the migration of some birds. Fish such as salmon find their direction by using their sense of smell. Some scientists believe that a few animals may even use the Earth’s magnetic field(磁场) to migrate, much like a person might use a compass. However, this has yet to be proven.

Exercise: Look at the PPT.
