As writing summary is, to some extent, a kind of writing, understand the importance of writing a summary; Work out the features of a summary according to the sample summary listed on the worksheet; Work in group to produce a summary about the story Gentlemen, Your Verdict to fit with the features/rubrics of a good summary; Make comments (both good parts and parts that need to be improved) on the produced summary in accordance with the features. Discuss about the features of a summary and practice writing a summary according to the rubrics of good summary writing Work in group to produce a summary that best fits with the features/rubrics of writing good summary; Comment on the produced summary according to the rubrics. 教

呈现本节课的purpose以及agenda

重新调整上课的流程：Summary的重要性放在开课讲，作为后续活动的引子。Presentation部分中的characteristics, strategies和tips有重复，将所有内容整合在一起进行讲解，时间不超过5分钟。

Original Group中讨论的时间可以稍长，约8-10分钟，回到Expert Group后instruction改为分享每个original group中得来的信息后，汇总成本篇文章的summary进行分享。

Warm Up Activity: (5 mins) Teacher is going to read a short passage The Very Hungry Caterpillar once. After listening to teachers’ reading, students have a chance to read through 3 summaries listed on worksheet to choose the best summary they think. Students discuss in groups: think about why Summary 2 is the best summary among all three of them and list some features of good summary according to Summary 2 or What should a good summary look like?

Presentation: (5 mins) 1.

Teacher’s presentation (5 mins)

Teacher sums up students’ discussion about good summary. Teacher talks about the importance of summary, characteristics, strategies and some tips about summary writing.

Practice: (25 mins) Students read a relatively longer story and produce a summary in class with their group mates. 2.

Students’ activity (15 mins)

Students work in group to summarize the whole story with most important information and appropriate details in group. 

Students are divided into five groups with five in one group called the original group. Each student chooses a specific chunk of the story. Those who choose the same chunk gather together, which is called expert group, to work out 2 to 3 pieces of important information of that part of the story. modify the information and put the most important information into a summary for oral sharing (List point form for presentations later). 3.

Students’ presentation and comments (10 mins) One original group presents their summary while the others should listen carefully and think about what they do well and what they need to improve.

Aspects that students may comment on:



Do they reach the requirements of characteristics of a good summary? 

Do they simply copy from the passage directly? 

Do they add their own opinion into the summary? 

Is every important details included in the summary?

Quiz: (5 mins) Students are going to do a quick in class quiz to check whether they can understand the key presentation today (Use APP-Plicker). Teacher can check students’ answers directly on the website of Plicker. The website is www.plicker.com .

每组做完Summary的演示后，其他各小组打分进行评价（提供相应的评分标准）；时间允许的每组的演示都可以由其余任意一组学生进行口头点评：好的和需要改进的部分。如时间不允许，则可以考虑第一、二组演示的学生可以进行简单点评。



Writing Summary Part One: Choose the BEST SUMMARY. Warm-up Activity Instruction: Listen to the short story and read the following three summaries. Think about whether it is a GOOD SUMMARY or not.

Summary #1 A bug comes out of an egg. It eats lots of food. This is a great book. If you want to find out how it ends, you should read it!

Summary #2 A caterpillar hatches from an egg. After eating many different kinds of food, it turns into a beautiful butterfly.

Summary #3 In the warm moonlight, a caterpillar hatches out of an egg. First it eats an apple. Then it eats a pear. Then it eats three plums. Then it eats four strawberries. Then it eats five oranges. Then it eats lots of other things. Finally it spins a cocoon around itself. It turns into a beautiful butterfly!
