Step I. Lead-in A song about friends and friendship

Today, we will talk about friends and friendship. Do you have friends? Yes, of course. Do you like them? What about you? Why do you choose them as your friends?

Now, we will learn about a story of two friends: Roy and Daniel. Let’s see how they are going on.

Step II. Reading

1. Listening

Now, turn to page 30 and listen the passage. Finish true or false questions.

2. Careful- reading

Read the passage again, aloud and carefully, and try to find out more information of it. Then answer some wh-questions: 

What was Roy like before his father died? 

What kind of relationship did Roy and Daniel

have? 

How did Roy change? 

What happened in the classroom that surprised

Daniel? 

What happened to the ￡500 ? 

How did Daniel know who had stolen it? Now you’ve got the answers. Here I have some new words and phrases for you, read after me.

Step III. Discussion

Now, I found 500 pounds in Roy’s pocket. Did Roy steal the money from the charity? Someone says ‘yes’, someone says ‘no’. If Roy did

steal the money from the charity, shall I tell the teacher or call the police? If Roy didn’t steal the money, what should I do?

Discuss it in groups of four.

Collect answers from students. Draw a conclusion; whether Roy stole the money or not, we help him all the same. Because we’re friends. Friends are the ones we can get help from and we can trust.

Step IV Enjoying some mottoes on friends and friendship

A friend is a present which you give yourself. A faithful friend is the medicine of life.
