Whether I am tired or not, I spend half an hour in reading books before going to bed. Although there are much more homework in Grade 9, I haven’t given up the habit. And the reason why I choose to insist reading every day is that reading can broaden my horizon and cultivate my interests. I would like to share the habit with you. 2) paraphrase the given material

proofreading

[sample 2]

Every time we communicate with others, there is always a speaker and a listener. So listening has the same importance with speaking. In fact, I’m not a good listener in the past. When I was a child, I like to talk, and I can chat with others on any topic. My friends always think I can talk forever. But I gradually notice the importance of listening. A friend isn’t a machine that can not always listen to you, so you should listen to him/her as well. When I listen to others, I can not only know what kind of person he/she is but also can accept his opinion so that can further my knowledge. On the other hand, he will be grateful for you to listen to him carefully. Only when you calm down and use your heart to listen, you can understand the deep meaning and one’s intention. Besides, listening carefully is useful while in class, talking with boss and attending meeting as well. So listening is a good habit that everyone should own it.

Checklist:

1.

Is the composition related to the given material? 2.

Does the writer voice his/her opinion clearly at the beginning?

3.

Does the writer give reasonable arguments to support his/her opinion? 4.

Does the writer give persuasive details like examples, data, or facts? 5.

Does the closing sentence restate your stand? 6.

Does the sentences flow smoothly?

Improved version

People tend to define communication as expressing. In fact, listening plays an important role in communication. My parents set a good example of being a considerate listener for me to learn from, and gradually I formed the habit of listening to others attentively.Listening helps me figure out what the speaker really wants, and that makes those speakers feel respected. Therefore, I can enjoy better communication with them. In addition, I gain some interesting ideas and expand my knowledge with the help of the habit of listening patiently to others. Listening serves as a bridge that leads me to people’s mental world. I firmly believe listening is the key to effective communication, and I will try to stick to the habit of being a good listener.

Does the sentences flow smoothly? discourse markers/transitions: In fact, therefore, in addition wording: plays an important role in..., set a good example for me to learn from, figure out, feel respected, expand my knowledge, servers as a bridge, stick to..., etc

Further practice [sample 4] A good habit is beneficial to our life. My grandma is a librarian and she takes me to her workplace. For years, I form the habit of reading books. Reading books brings me a lot of benefits. Firstly, I get knowledge form various books. Knowledge can broaden my horizon, which enables me to share opinions with my friends and teachers easily. Secondly, reading books helps me calm down and get rid of unhappy memories. When I am depressed, I always keep myself deep in books. What’s more, trying to grasp what the writer is going to tell me in the book is really an enjoyable process for me. It provides me with a chance to make the sense of the world. All in all, reading books is a good habit.

As is known to all a good habit makes a difference in our lives. In my opinion, reading books is exactly a good habit. I picked up reading when I was a little child. The fantastic world in books attract me a lot. As I grow up, reading various books shows me different lives of the characters, which move me or teach me a lesson. I can focus my attention quickly on what I am doing after having the habit of reading. It is also like a bridge which can lead me to people who share the same interest with me. It is reading that makes me a better boy. 
