教学过程与方式

Step I Revision Check the answers to the exercises in Vocabulary of WORKBOOK. And then ask some Ss to retell the passages. T: Now I will ask some of you to retell the passages. Who would like to have a try?

S: Let me have a try. During the Second World War(1939-1945), Germany occupied many countries, including France. On the 6th June 1944, troops from the United States, Britain and Canada landed on the beaches of Normandy in France, known as the D-Day landings, to fight against Germany. The Operation Overland was the most important battle of the war in Europe. The operation was extremely dangerous and many soldiers were killed. But eventually, the D-Day landings was successful and this was the beginning of the end of the Second World War.

S: Early on the morning of 6 June 1944, the soldiers of Able Company crossed the English Channel. But during the process, they were fired by the Germans. Half an hour after the first attack, two thirds of the company had died, being killed by Germans or drowned in the water. The survivors left were exhausted and shocked. Six of them tried to climb up the cliff to get off the beach. But unfortunately, four were too exhausted to reach the top, so only two succeeded and then joined a group from another company and fought with them against Germans. S: On the 6th June 2004, survivors of the D-Day landings from different countries returned to France to remember their lost comrades. T: You have done a good job. Thank you. Step II Listening Task 1 Pre-listening Let the Ss read the passage on page 55 first. T: Please open your books and turn to page 55. Read the passage quickly to get the main idea of it. A few minutes later. T: Who would like to tell me the main idea of the passage? S: The passage tells us during the Second World War, German war planes attacked London using Blitz.

T: Right. Then what is Blitz? S: Blitz means lightning war, a sudden military attack. The Blitz specially refers to the bombing of British cities by German aircraft in 1940 and 1941. T: Good. In these attacks, many people were killed by bombs. To avoid being bombed,

air raid shelters were set up. Staying in air raid shelters could decrease the amount of the deaths.

Task 2 While-listening T: Now please listen to an interview with Alice and Henry Porter, who lived in London during the Blitz. I will play the tape three times. For the first time, listen for the main idea and complete Activity 2 on page 55 and Activity 4 on page 56. For the second time, answer the questions in Activity 3 on page 55. For the last time, check the answers on your own. Play the tape three times and then check the answers with the whole class.

Task 3 Post-listening

T: Now turn to page 58 and read the lines from the listening passage in EVERYDAY ENGLISH. Please choose the correct answers. Several minutes later, check the answers. Then deal with FUNCTION. T: Please turn to page 56. The sentences in Activity 1 are from the listening passage. Read them carefully, and then complete the sentences below in your own words. A few minutes later, ask some Ss to speak out their own sentences. Sample sentences: 1. I remember feeling the house shake crazily. / I remember that I felt the house shake crazily. 2. If I remember rightly, we should clean the classroom this afternoon. 3. The first thing I remember was if there could be some water to drink. 4. I-ll never forget my first learning to drive a car. T: Excellent. Imagine that you are a survivor of the D-Day landings. Please write a paragraph to describe your memories of some events. When you write, you can refer to the events listed in Activity 2. And the starting sentence and the ending sentence are given in Activity 3. I will give you ten minutes to finish. Then I will ask some of you to read your paragraphs. Ten minutes later, ask some Ss to read their writings. A sample paragraph:

I was part of the invasion force at the D-Day landings. I remember that my

comrades and I were going to cross the English Channel to get to Omaha Beach in boats. But when we were about 5 kilometres from the beach, the Germans started firing artillery shells at us. Till now I still remember the sound of the artillery shells. We couldn’t find a good way except jumping into the water. Because of the deep water, many of my comrades lost their lives in the water. I used all my energy to reach the beach. When I got, I felt extremely exhausted and shocked. If I remember rightly, two thirds of our company had been dead at that time. Then six of us alive tried to climb up the cliff to get off the beach. Unfortunately, there were four who were too tired to climb up the cliff. Finally only one of my comrades and I succeeded. We met another group, so we joined them to fight with them against Germans. I think I will never forget the things that happened to me on 6th June 1944. Step III Listening and Speaking (P100)

T: Now please turn to page 100. Look at the six headings in Exercise 12. Who would like to say something about them? S: Let me try first. Bombing campaign refers to a campaign using bombs to attack a place. S: London is the capital of England. It was attacked by German bombs during the Second World War. S: Blitz means lightning war, a sudden military attack. S: Air raid shelter is built specially to serve as protection against enemy air raids.

S: Underground stations I think could be used as a kind of air raid shelters during the war.

S: German planes I think dropped bombs during the World War Two on many cities in Britain. T: Good. Now let-s listen to a conversation between Tom and his grandparents who were in London during the Blitz. I will play the tape three times. For the first time, get the main idea and do Exercise 13. For the second time, when you listen, please write down notes to complete exercises 14 &

15. For the last time, check the answers on your own. Play the tape three times and then check the answers with the whole class.

T: Since that you have listened to the tape, now please work in pairs. Suppose one of you was in London in 1940 during the Blitz. And the other is a reporter from our school newspaper. Make dialogues according to the lists in Exercise 16.

Five minutes later, ask some pairs to act out the interview. A sample interview: A: Good morning, Mr. Li. Were you in London during the Blitz? B: Yes. At that time I lived in London with my parents.

A: How old were you when the Blitz happened? B: I was twelve years old, a young boy. We were having classes in the classroom that day, when we heard terrible noises made by planes and bombs. At first we didn-t know what had happened. It was horrible. Everyone was so upset. There were police and soldiers everywhere. We didn-t know what was going on. I was upset, too. Not because I was afraid ... I was just worried that I wouldn-t be able to get home... A: Then what happened? B: We were taken to the underground station nearby and were told that we must stay there, or we would be killed by bombs. I was very worried about my parents, but I had no idea about what I should do. Afterwards, I got to know that my parents and our neighbors in that district had been taken to another air raid shelter.

A: It was so dangerous. During that period what was frightening or exciting to you? B: The most frightening thing to me was the sound of bombing. The exciting thing to me was when I had the chance to meet my parents, which was my most important memory. We were so happy though there were many dangers here and there. Step IV Homework T: That-s all for today-s class. Please write a paragraph about your own personal memories after class. You can choose one topic from the six topics in Activity 4 on page 57.
