This picture book is taken from The Little Critters series, by Mercer Mayer with the topic of “major growing up issues.” The story The New Baby not only includes some knowledge about baby caring but also shows the amazing trait siblings can get through having a baby--empathy, which is meaningful. By reading, thinking and talking, students know how to take care of a new baby and try to know families and make them happy. II. Analysis of the students Students may find it easy to read but a little difficult to comprehend this story. For one thing, students are familiar with babies because they may have siblings or cousins. Thus students may know something about how to care for babies. For another, it’s a little difficult for them to describe the reasons behind the changes of the baby’s emotions clearly. Therefore it’s a necessity to design some effective activities and experiments. III. Teaching aims Knowledge aims 1. By reading the story with the teacher, students will be able to read the story. 2. With the help of the teacher, students will be able to describe how to take care of a baby and how to make families happy with the following sentence: I can … to make him/her happy. Ability aims 1.

Students will be able to get the main idea and details of the story by using different reading skills. 2. Students will be able to talk about some ways to care for the baby and ways to make other family members happy. Moral aims 1. Students will think about why the baby cried at the first part and
