A Teaching Design for Book11 Unit5 Launching your career

Using language ǁ: Writing task Design Concept According to New English Curriculum Standards, we should develop students’ ability of autonomous learning and cooperative learning. Meanwhile, we should also improve students’ ability of getting information and develop their comprehensive language competence and positive attitudes. Students are the masters of learning. Student-centered teaching with the teacher as a guide should be adopted in English teaching.

Analysis of the teaching material The topic of this unit is Launching your career, and this class is mainly about how to write a letter of application, and it is designed to improve students’ writing skills. In order to make it more interesting and arouse students' interest in English learning, I select a teaching material similar to that of the textbook. First, students are going to find out the structure of this kind of letter by observing the sample writing. And then they are going to read the sample writing to find some useful words and expressions related to the letter of application, which are of great help in their writing. Meanwhile, they will be guided by the teacher to add more similar expressions. Finally, students will be able to write a letter of application.

This class plays an important part in the whole unit because it offers students an opportunity to output what they have learned in this unit.

Analysis of the students The teaching objects are all students from Grade two, some of whom have “classroom anxiety” in English class. That is to say, they are not confident enough to speak English and answer questions. Thus, I plan to organize some group teaching activities such as discussion, video-sharing and so on, through which students will be able to learn how to cooperate with others and learn from each other, thus building up their confidence, cultivating their sense of cooperation and helping them experience the happiness of development.

Teaching Aims At the end of the class, the majority of the students will be able to 1. Learn some useful expressions related to a letter of application and some strategies for writing this kind of letter.

3. Enjoy the process of learning English by working together and realize the importance of having dreams and working hard in launching their careers.

Before the class, encourage students to be more active, confident and cooperative. And ask students to encourage each other .

encourage Ss by using some encouraging words and sentences because only when Ss are active in class can they really enjoy the process of learning and make more progress.

Step2: Warming up and lead-in

Show Ss. a short video. All the photos are about the international communication in our school and are about the students in our class. Then students will be told that some students from our school will have the opportunity to go to Willink School as exchange students. But first they have to apply to our school for the opportunity. That is to say, they have to write a letter of application.

[DP] Familiar materials can easily arouse Ss’ interest in learning the new knowledge.

Step3: Learning Aims

[DP] To let Ss be aware of what they are going to do in this class. With these learning aims in mind, they will learn more efficiently.

Step4: Before-writing

In this part, students will be shown a sample writing about a letter of application. Then they will be guided to finish the following two tasks: find the structure & find the useful expressions in the article. More importantly, they will work together to add more similar expressions with the help of the teacher.

[DP] To guide Ss to know about the structure and some useful expressions, both of which will be of great help in their writing in the next part.

Step5: While-writing

Ss are asked to write a letter of application according to the writing task given below. And three students will be asked to the blackboard. One student, one paragraph.

Step6: Post-writing

In this part, Ss will be encouraged to share their article and polish their article in their own groups.

[DP] To help Ss have a further understanding of what we should pay attention to when we write a letter of application and how to check and polish the article. Meanwhile, try to cultivate their sense of cooperation and help them experience the happiness of development.

Step7: Summary

Ask one student to summarize what we have learned.

Step8: Homework Polish your writing after class with the help of your group members and get well prepared to share your articles with us tomorrow.

Step9: Video-sharing At the end of the class, share with SS a video made by the teacher, in which there are some photos about the students in our class. And the background music is called Dream it possible, which can surely makes students inspired and are willing to work hard to achieve their dreams. [DP] This video is made and designed to encourage SS to bravely hold on to their dreams, gradually improve themselves and try to launch their career and make their dreams come true, thus helping them build up the correct values and views on life.

Teaching Reflection(教学反思) 本节课基本顺利的完成了课前设定的三维目标。从知识目标来看，学生通过观察、阅读范文掌握了最基本的相关表达及此类信件的结构，这在一定程度上作为“输入”也为后面的写，即“输出”做好了铺垫。从能力目标来看，大部分学生都在知识目标达成的基础上进一步提高了他们的写作技能，并顺利完成了多要求的申请信的写作。从情感价值观目标来看，学生通过在课堂上的合作、探究，享受到了团队合作的重要性，体验到了发展的快乐。尤其是通过最后的自制励志视频，让学生懂得了要想开启自己的事业生涯、实现自己的梦想，我们就一定要坚持我们的梦想，一定要去追逐、去前进、去改变！这个目标既是这节课的主题升华，也同时将本单元的话题上升到了一个高度。

点：

课前激励环节，鼓励学生积极、自信、合作；展示学习目标，让学生明确本节课的学习任务；巧妙地融合了先进的信息化技术，让这节课更加有活力！

不足之处：由于课堂时间有限，没能将每个小组的作品一一点评，只能布置成课后练习在小组内批改。所以计划在下节课利用一部分时间来继续进行课堂展示及点评。
