Subjunctive Mood: If Clause
Lesson Plan
Teaching Aims: 1.
The students are able to identify subjunctive mood and know it’s meaning. 2.
The students are able to write sentences using subjunctive mood. 3.
The students are able to use if clause using subjunctive mood to express their wishes, regrets and imaginations. Teaching Procedure: Step 1: Lead-in 1.
Greet Ss and play a song for them. While listening, the Ss should fill in the blanks in the lyrics and pay attention to words in color. The lyrics: If I _______ a boy
Even just for a day I’d roll out of bed in the morning
And throw on what I wanted and go Drink beer with the guys And chase after girls I’d kick it with who I wanted
And I’d never get confronted for it
Because they’d stick up for me
If I ______ a boy I think that I could understand how it feels to love a girl I swear I’d be a better man
2.
After listening to the song, the teacher leads the students to conclude that subjunctive mood can be used to describe things that are impossible, unreal or unlikely to happen. Then introduce the topic of the class. Step 2: Reading and finding out sentences The students are asked to work in pairs to read the story and underline the sentences using subjunctive mood in the passage. Then the teacher asks a student to read the sentences.
Tommy didn’t do well in the College Entrance Examination. His father, King, thought that he should go to the university, although it is not good.
His mother, Queen, thought that he should study another year at high school and try again next year. King and Queen had a quarrel.
King: Tommy should go to university.
Queen: It's all your fault. If you had been more strict with Tommy in the past, he
could have got higher grades in the exam. King: It’s not my fault.
If Tommy had worked harder before, he might have done a
better job in the exam.
Queen: That’s because of you. If I were you, I would spend more time with him.
King: We should ask Tommy. I don’t think he will listen to you. If he took your advice
later, he would waste another year. Queen: But I know him. He wants to be a scientist. He said if he should be a
scientist in the future, he should make contributions to our country.
King: I don’t believe that. If now I believed what you said, I would be an idiot. Queen: Let’s ask Tommy. If he were to choose this university later, I would never
quarrel with you again. Step 3 : Dividing the sentences into groups 1.
The Ss are asked to work in pairs to divide the sentences using subjunctive mood into three groups according to the time of the events and copy them into the chart. about past
about present
about future
2.
A pair of students are asked to put up the sentences using subjunctive mood in the right places on the blackboard. The sentences have already been copied on pieces of paper by the teacher. Step 4: Working out the rules 1.
The Ss are asked to read the sentences together. Then they should work in groups to compare the sentences and find out the right forms of verbs used in subjunctive mood. If clause(从句)
The main clause(主句)
Time Past
Present
Future
2.
The teacher shows the answer of one of the groups on the screen and checks the answer with the students. Step 5: Blank-filling The Ss work individually to complete the letter written by King to Queen. The teacher checks Ss’ work and invites two of the students to write down their answers on the blackboard.
Dear Queen,
I am sorry. I realise I have made many mistakes and feel regretful for what I did. In the past, if I had cared more about Tommy, he (1)_____________(do) better in study. If I (2)____________(talk) with you, we wouldn’t have had a quarrel. In recent days, I often have some imaginations about our family life. If I (3)_______ (have) superpower, I would create whatever you like. If I (4)_______ (be) able to read people’s mind, I (5)__________ (create) what you and Tommy think about. But I am an ordinary person. In the future, whatever happens, I will discuss with you and solve the problems with you. If I (6)_____________ (quarrel) with you again, I (7)___________ (be) a good husband or father. I hope our dreams about our future can come true, although they seems unlikely. If we (8)____________ (have) a son who is a scientist, we would be the happiest people in the world. Anyhow, I promise I will care more about our family from now on and be a good father and husband.
Yours,
King
Step 6: Making sentences The teacher shows some pictures and key words on the slides. The Ss should make sentences with the help of the pictures and key words. They are given some time to prepare. When the teacher says “Who knows”
, the Ss should raise their hands as quickly as they can if they know the answers.

_______________________________ Step 7: Writing The Ss are given some stickers and are asked to write down their regrets, imaginations and wishes of their lives using subjunctive mood. Then they should exchange their writing with their group members to correct the mistakes in the sentences and share their ideas. After that the teacher invites some of them to share their opinions and put their wrings on the wish tree on the blackboard. Step 8: Summary
The teacher leads the Ss to make a summary of the lesson. Step 9: Homework If you were Tommy, what would you choose? If you were a father or mother, what would you do to take care of your children and educate them? Choose one of the two topics and write a short passage to share your ideas with the title “If I were Tommy”
or “If I were a parent”.
