Zootopia USING animals to tell stories that teach important life lessons is as old as Aesop’s Fables (《伊索寓言》). But with Zootopia, a new movie from Walt Disney Animation, which came out in China on March 4, this storytelling idea has reached a new level.
In fact, the movie is so inspiring that the Los Angeles Times noted, “It’s going to take a lot to compete with Zootopia for next year’s animated film Oscar.”
The story begins in a city of anthropomorphic animals called Zootopia, in which walking, talking mammals live together in harmony. When a small-town rabbit Judy Hopps fulfills her dream and becomes the first rabbit to join the police department in Zootopia, the police chief only gives her a safe duty as a meter maid(处理违章停车的女警), due to her small size and being a prey(猎物) animal instead of a predator(肉食动物). One day on the job, the rabbit meets Nick Wilde, a worldly fox, and he cheerfully makes fun of her. But she ends up needing him to solve a case of a mysterious missing otter (水獭), who is among several animals that have suddenly disappeared from the city. With only 48 hours to find him, Judy realizes that her best bet is to team up with Nick, for he knows plenty of people who can help her find out who’s behind the crime that is making Zootopia less peaceful.
Apart from the attractive storyline, Zootopia deals with serious issues too.
Judy’s struggles aren’t the only problems shown in the movie. It may look like Zootopia is full of harmony, but there is actually a lot of prejudice. At one point, when the crime happens, predator species of animals are suspected and discriminated (被歧视的) against because of the so-called “nature of wild animals” and the prey species are afraid of them and therefore stay away from them.
While some classic stories just tell children to follow their elders’ instructions, Zootopia “encourages young viewers to think further about what they’ve been told about over the years”, The New York Times commented. “If you don’t try anything new, you’ll never fail”, Judy’s father tells her. But as it turns out, she doesn’t do what people expect of rabbits or women, proving that she is tougher than expected.
The movie is a hit in China. It is the best teaching material for us to learn to be brave to pursue our dream even if everyone around tells us to give up. Like the theme song sung by Shakira,
I won't give up no I won't give in
Till I reach the end and then I'll start again
No I won't leave I wanna try everything
I wanna try even though I could fail
