Read and Say

One sunny morning, Kitty, a little cat, found a mirror in front of her bed when she got up.

Kitty was surprised that she found a little cat was the same as her. Kitty said to the mirror, “Who are you?” The little cat in the mirror moved her mouth like Kitty. It seemed to say, “Who are you?” too. Kitty felt very strange about this.Kitty was very angry. She stared with her round eyes and straightened her tail. She shouted at the mirror cat with fierce face, “Do not act like me!” But the little cat in the mirror did what Kitty did. Kitty was afraid and ran away quickly.Kitty went to her mother and told mother what happened. Mother laughed and said, “Silly girl, the little cat in the mirror was you. You smile to her. So does she. You are fierce. So is she.”

Manners can be quite different in different countries. When you go to a foreign

country, you should learn something about its manners first. In America, people will greet each other with a handshake. But in Japan, instead of a handshake, a person will bow from the waist. The younger you are, the lower you bow. In European countries like Italy, Greece, and Russia, people often greet each other with a kiss. In China when people meet, they often ask each other “Where are you going?” or “Have you had your meal?”

But in England, people talk about the weather. And when your mouth is full of food, don’t talk with others. In Thailand, you can’t touch a child’s head. In some countries like Egypt and Iran, people like to stand close to each other. In Korea, people stand far apart when they talk. They feel unhappy if you stand too near. In India, it’s rude to eat with you left hand, because people will think you hate the food. The world is an interesting place but learning the manners of different countries takes time.
