Listening and Speaking
Teaching time: Overall Design and Guiding Principles 40 minutes
This is a listening and speaking lesson which aims to develop students’ ability in talking about animals. Meanwhile, students’
linguistic and cultural knowledge is expected to be enriched through listening and speaking activities. In this lesson I mainly employed Task-based Teaching Method, Natural Approach as well as the Communicative Language Teaching Method to create certain scene and ask students to complete relevant tasks, assist them to learn in a relaxed atmosphere and build a confidence towards listening, thus forming the habit of active learning and improving their comprehensive language competence.
Teaching Context
Analysis of teaching material: This is a listening and speaking lesson. The lesson focuses on talking about animals. The topic of this unit is closely related to students’ real life, and in accord with students cognitive level, thus can make students learn meaningfully and build students a confidence of English learning.
Analysis of students:
The objects of this lesson are students in Grade 5. Students has already learned some words such as simple animal words, thus they have mastered some skills of tense-learning and fully prepared to learn the lesson cognitively.
However, primary students lack the ability of systematic autonomous language learning and some students have no confidence of English learning. Therefore, it requires teachers to set up the tasks from easy to the advanced to guide them.
Teaching Aims 1.
Aims of knowledge and ability: (1)
master and use some important words, such as:
horses/fast/cows/pigs/sheep/bees/elephants/pandas
(2)
be able to use these sentences: “-Where are you going?-I’m going to ...”“-What animals do you want to see?Why?-I want to see...They are...”
(3) be able to get correct information from listening material. (4) be capable of talking about animals. 2. Aims of process and methods:
Games, group work,competition,Interactive teaching, TPR teaching and communicate
language teaching.

Aims of Emotion attitude and values:
Know that we should love and protect animals.

Greetings: chant and say hello 2.
Sing a song:
《Old Macdonald had a farm》

Divide students into two groups:“cow group”
and“rabbit group”
The purpose of my design:
(1) to catch students’ attention and arouse their interests.
(2) to liven up the lesson and lead in the topic-----animals. Step 2: Presentation
(12 minutes) (1)
The teacher plays as old Macdonald and give a job notice to the students. If they can pass three barriers they can become a guide of Macdonald’s farm. Task1
Magic eyes [Rules]:look and say quickly. [Time]: 5 minutes [Assessment]: can guess the words quickly and correctly. (2)
Use some pictures, voice and riddles to lead in the new words of horses/fast/ cows/pigs/sheep/bees/elephants/pandas, students guess and act like an animal.Then the teacher teach the words and ask “Where are you going?”, students answer “I’m going to the farm/zoo.” Lastly, teach,chant and practice them one by one. (3)
Play a game: Frog jump (4)
Activity: listen and number
The purpose of my design: (1) to impress students the key words by showing pictures.
(2)to make the class living and catch the students’ attention.
(3) to improve students’ listening skills.
Step 3: Practice
(7 minutes) (1)
Create a situation: Old Macdonald is in a hurry, because some animals are missing. Can you help him to find the missing animals and then send them home ? (2)
Game: What’s missing?

Task2: Ask and answer [Rules]:ask and send animals one by one. [Time]: 3 minutes. [Assessment]:can talk with partners fluently and quickly. The purpose of my design: to have the students practice more and make sure they can use the animal words and the target language “Where are you going? I’m going to the farm/zoo.” to communicate with others.
Step 4:Consolidation
(8 minutes) Task3
Pair work: Let’s play and write [Rules]:Make a play with your partner and finish “Let’s write”.
[Time]: 3 minutes. [Assessment]:can make a show fluently and correctly. The purpose of my design: (1) to encourage the students to communicate withe others and practice all the new words and sentences, here sets a task for them to make an easy dialogue in pairs. (2)to train students’ ability of transforming what they have heard into the words that they could write.
Step 5: Summary
(5 minutes)
(1)T:What have we learned today?
Lead students read and act the animal words again, then ask and answer with the target sentences.
T: Are you happy today? (2) See a movie about animals The purpose of my design: (1) to have the students get familiar with the vocabulary and the target language again.
(2) to get students know that :“Animals are our good friends. We should protect the animals and care for our home.”
Step 6: Homework
(1 minutes)
Talk about animals with your parents.
The purpose of my design:
to train students’
ability of talking about animals, guide them to form the habit of active learning and reinforce what they have learned in the class.
