Teaching methods Task-based teaching and learning Teaching procedures

Task 1: Predicting

What does the “disaster” in the title refer to?

Task 2: Leading-in

What is your most serious worry as a student?

Task 3: Reading for the main idea

Read paragraph1 and the headings to find out the main idea of the whole passage.

Liu Xiaoming _failed__ the college entrance examinations and felt __frustrated__ but _cheered__ __up_ with the help of two _articles_ given by his parents.

Task 4: Reading for the structure

Read the passage and divide it into several parts based on your understanding.

Part 1 ( Para1 ): My situation

Part 2 ( Para2 ): World values survey Part 3 ( Para3-5 ): Seeking knowledge for its own sake

Part 4 ( Para6-7 ): Counting my blessings

Task 5: Reading for the detailed information

Part 1: Read this part and fill in the chart.

me guidance;

Main idea 1:After I failed the college entrance examinations, my personality changed. My parents tried to comfort me and give me guidance.

Part 2: Read this part carefully and fill in each blank with one word.

If a family had _enough_ money to cover _living_ _expense__ and _entertainment__, more money didn’t seem to make them __happier__. The USA, the _richest_ country, is the __13th__ happiest.

_Money__ or _jobs__ may be not as important as I thought. _Families_ and _friends__ also weigh a lot. Main idea 2:A World Values Survey showed that money or a good job was not as important as I had thought.

Part3: Read this part and answer the following questions: 1.Why did Zhang Guoqing leave school? He was forced to leave school because of his family’s poor financial situation.

2.What was Zhang Guoqing’s living condition in his pursuit of knowledge?

•

For twelve years, he went from job to job.

•

At different times, he was a street cleaner, a pedicab driver, vegetable seller

and worker on a building site.

•

During these years, he slept rough under bridges and searched for food in

dustbins.

3.What do you think of his way of spending money? He spent money on books rather than on living like food and places to sleep. It is

worthwhile because his spirit fed on philosophical ideas in books in spite of his difficult physical life.

4. What can you learn from Zhang Guoqing?

We should seek knowledge for its own sake and never give up. We also need to

pursue our dream with great determination and stick to it, no matter how hard it is.

Main idea 3: Zhang Guoqing, who had suffered a great deal in his pursuit of knowledge, finally realized his dream with great determination.

Part 4: read and answer the questions What was Xiaoming’s feeling after reading the story? Why?

He began to feel ashamed. •

He had never pursued knowledge for its own sake or give up anything for

studies. •

He had been overconfident and wasted his time playing. •

He had never gone without anything but he had lost heart and gave up easily. •

He feel guilty about his constant reproaches and jealousy about the success of

his friends.

Main idea 4:I changed my attitude positively and began my road to recovery.

Task 6: Summary writing (Homework) List the four main ideas and try to combine them together to form a short passage. After I failed the college entrance examinations, my personality changed. My parents tried to comfort me and give me guidance. A World Values Survey showed that money or a good job was not as important as I had thought. Zhang Guoqing, who had suffered a great deal in his pursuit of knowledge, finally realized his dream with great determination.

I changed my attitude positively and began my road to recovery.

One possible version: Failing the college entrance examinations led to the change in my character, for which my parents offered me comfort and guidance.

With their help, I saw a survey showing that we needn’t attach too much importance to money. Afterwards, I read another article about Zhang Guoqing, who had gone through hardships to pursue knowledge and finally fulfilled his dream. Touched by what he had done, I cheered up and began to recover.

Reflection: The passage is a bit difficult for my students, so we spent much time focusing on the understanding of it. We achieved the first four objectives when we finished the lesson due to the limitation of time. Therefore, I left task 6 as homework for students, and I would talk about the ways to write a good summery in the next period, based on their writing. 3
