Step I Warming Up
Let the students say some-thing about small talk. Talk about the social skills with the students.
T: As we all know, in our daily life, we often make all kinds of conversations with someone who we are unfamiliar to. And when we are doing this, we need social skills. But not everyone has good social skills. What about you? Do you have good social skills? (Students: Yes./No.) Maybe some students are not sure about it, let’s do a small quiz. I prepared some questions to check if you have good social skills, you can score for yourselves.
Show the following questions on the screen and ask the students to do it by themselves. 1. Have you ever crossed the road to avoid talking to someone you recognize? A. Always(1分)
B. Often(2分)
C. Seldom (3分) 2. When you go to a party, can you talk confidently to every guest? A. Always(3分)
B. Often(2分)
C. Seldom (1分) 3. Do you want to make more friends but lack the confidence to talk to people you don’t know? A. Yes(1分)
B. No.(3分)
4. Are you nervous about the idea of being at a social event in another country? A. Yes(1分)
B. No.(3分)
Then call back their answers. If their scores are above 10, they must be very outgoing and popular at school. If their scores are below 5, they should learn how to develop their social skills. Step Ⅱ

Task 1: Fast reading
Ask the students to skim the passage and decide what kind of book it is from.
A: an English teaching book B: a business course C: a book which tells you what to do at social events D: a book to help you prepare for a speaking examination
After skimming the title and the headline of each part for one minute, check their answers. T: Good job. Before you read or buy a book, you should form a good habit of deciding whether it is worth reading or buying by reading the title and subtitles or preface. It is very important for you and can save you a lot of time and money. Task 2: Scanning
