Watch a video and ask the students to read the passage; students pick out the subjunctive mood in the passage and pay attention to the cue words and expressions. A gopher was attracted by trucks of vegetables to a farmers market while searching for food.

He thought,“

Supposing they all belonged to me,how happy I would be. If only some of them fell off the truck, that would be fine.”

So the gopher dug a hole on the ground hoping the passing trucks will get caught by it ,therefore, the vegetables on which may drop off.

However, the gopher was not so lucky. At first, a carrot

fell off the first truck but a squirrel took it away .But for the gopher ’s walking on air(得意忘形),that wouldn’t have happened. Then without the dust produced by the second truck, the corns might not have been eaten by some roosters. In that case, the gopher wouldn’t have fought with them. As a result, he was pinned under a fallen board. Otherwise, A variety of vegetables wouldn’t haven dropped off the third truck. To his depression(郁闷的是),a flock of crows came down and ate up all these vegetables in no time. The gopher was so angry that he broke the board into pieces. At last, if it had not been for the nails(钉子)

on the broken board, the gopher couldn’t have been stuck to the bottom of a cow from the last truck. What a poor gopher! If it were not for the idea of getting something for nothing(不劳而获), something

wouldn’t happen in the world. Step6 Summary
