Despite many barriers and setbacks, the 1896 Olympics were regarded as a great success. The second Summer Olympics were held in Paris. This event attracted more than four times as many athletes, including 11 women, who were allowed to officially compete for the first time, in croquet(门球), golf, sailing and tennis.
There were fewer athletes in the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, Missouri, United States because of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition World’s Fair(路易斯安那州购买博览会世界博览会). But the number increased in the 1908 London games. From then, the Games continued to grow, attracting 2,504 competitors, in Stockholm in 1912. This was the first to fulfill Pierre de Coubertin's original idea. However, the scheduled Berlin Games of 1916 were canceled because of World War I.
The first post-war Summer Olympics Games were held in 1948 in London, except Germany and Japan. At the 1952 Summer Olympics Games Helsinki and the USSR(苏联) team competed for the first time and finally became one of the advantageous teams. The Games held in Melbourne in 1956 was greatly successful. Rome hosted the games in the year 1960. In 1964, Tokyo was a turning point in the global visibility and popularity of the Olympics. However, the performances at the 1968 Mexico City games were affected by the height of the city. Moreover, politics disturbed the Munich Olympics in 1972, resulting in worse side effects. The games held in Montreal in 1976 were regarded as the most expensive until the 2008 Summer Olympics. Due to the Afghan Civil War , the 1980 Summer Olympics held in Moscow were boycotted, most countries didn’t join in it. The 1984 Olympics in Los Angles got right again. Without the Eastern European countries, the 1984 Games were in the control of their host country. A Chinese athlete was the first time to win the gold medal at the same year. Later, Seoul hosted the Summer Olympics Games in 1988. The 1992 Summer Olympics were held in Barcelona. The next Games were held in Atlanta in 1996 and 2000 Games were in Sydney, Australia. In the Summer Olympics history, the games came back to its birthplace Athens in 2004. The 2008 Beijing Olympics Games gave new concept to it. 2012 Summer Olympics were held in London, United Kingdom. 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro were very simplest. 2020 Summer Olympics will be held in Tokyo, Japan.( From:http://icnsportsweb.com) Task 1 Decide whether the sentences are true (T) or false (F) according to the passage 1. Step 4 Passage Three The 2016 Rio Olympic Games had come to an end. Without doubt, many Chinese sports fans had sat in front of the TV and cheered our athletes on by the time the games started, hoping that they would get as many gold medals as possible. But sometimes our desire for gold medals can result in the sadness of failure. When Liu Xiang, China’s track hero, pulled out of the Beijing Olympics due to injury, he greatly disappointed many Chinese sports fans. But things are different now. In the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, we saw a healthier and more lenient Chinese attitude toward the sportspeople, fully in line with the Olympic spirit. China didn’t win any gold medals on the first day. But, instead of criticizing the athletes who failed to finish on top of the podium(领奖台), the majority of fans were happy with their efforts and interacting ways.
In the 1990s, Chinese athletes were giving stock answers of winning for the country's glory and honor when questioned by journalists. However, Rio 2016 saw a whole new side to the nation's Olympians, as athletes revealed their personalities on social media.

Appendix History Of Winter Olympics The first Winter Olympics Games was organized in the year 1924 in Chamonix, France. Athletes from around16 countries came to participate in the Winter Olympics Games. There were over 200 athletes taking part in a small selection of events. The second Winter Olympics was held in 1928 in St Moritz. The third was held in Lake Place in the United States of America. There were fewer athletes participating this time. The Lake Placid games were not too successful due to the lack of snow and the Great Depression(大萧条
指1929—1933年之间发源于美国,后来波及许多资本主义国家的经济危机) that was taking place.
The games went back to Europe in the year 1936 when Germany hosted them, and these marked the last Winter Olympics for 12 years due to the Second World War. Later, the IOC selected the Swiss town of St. Moritz for the second time to host the first post-war Games in 1948. St. Moritz was untouched by World War II because of Switzerland's neutrality. Almost 28 countries competed in the games nearly double the amount from the first games held in 1924. Moreover, in 1952, Oslo in Norway also hosted Winter Olympics Games and the 1956 games were awarded to Italy which was the first Winter Olympics to be televised. In 1960 America again was the host in Squaw Valley. In 1964, the Winter Olympics was held in the town of Innsbruck, Austria and remained in Europe in 1968 when Grenoble in France hosted the games. The 1968 event was the first Winter Olympics to be televised in color. The first Winter Olympics Games that was held outside of Europe or America was in the year 1972 when Japan hosted the games. 35 Nations participated in the event with China and the Philippines taking part for the first ever time. However, Denver in America was originally awarded the 1976 games but the people of Colorado expressed their opposition to the event and in a state referendum opted against hosting them. Innsbruck in Austria stepped in and took over with much of the infrastructure(基础设施)
still in place from 1964. In the Winter Olympics that was held in America in 1980, almost 36 nations participated in the event with the Soviet Union leading the medal table with 10 gold medals in total. 1984 saw the games in Europe again in Yugoslavia, a record 49 countries took part with Egypt, Monaco, Puerto Rico, Senegal and Virgin Islands taking part for the first time. In the history of Winter Olympics 1988 which was held in Calgary in Canada was highly successful with 57 nations taking part in the events, the Soviet Union regained the top spot in the medals table with East Germany close behind. The 1992 Winter Olympics games were the last to be held in the same year as the Summer Games. They were hosted in the French Savoie region. The 1994 games were held in Lillehammer, 67 nations took part with Russia leading the medals table with 11 Gold medals. Winter Olympics was held in Japan for the second time in 1998. 72 countries participated in the event with more than 2000 participants. The 19th Winter Olympics was held in the 2002 in Salt Lake City, USA .78 nations participated in the games with Norway leading the table with 13 Gold Medals. The last Winter Olympics to be held were hosted by Turin in Italy, with over 80 Nations taking part. In 2010 the games was held in Vancouver in Canada ,in 2014 it was held in Sochi Russia. The Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, were from February 9 to 25,2018. In 2022 the games will be held in Beijing with a record number of countries predicted to enter.
