What other western festivals do you know? S1: Thanksgiving Day. S2: Halloween. T: Good. They are very famous in China now. Anything else? S3: Mother’s Day. S4: Father’s Day. T: Very good. I think these festivals are very necessary. Maybe you are shy to express your love to your parents in your daily life, but these festivals are the suitable chance for you, because parents are the people who love us most in the world.Look at the first 4 questions on Page 11. Please have a discussion with others in your group. I will give you four minutes. After four minutes. T: Time is up. The first question: “Is it important to show love and respect for your parents? Why? Volunteer? S1: It is very important for us to show love and respect for our parents. Because they provide food, clothing, shelter, education, health and other necessities for us. S2: No one can deny the supreme sacrifice and care that parents render to their child. T: Wonderful! Showing love and respect for our parents is one of China’s good traditions. So, who can tell me how the people of some countries in the world show love and respect for their parents? S3: They use Mother’s Day and Father’s Day that we mentioned just now to show love and respect for the parents. T: Who can tell me the date of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day? S4: Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of every May. The third Sunday

of June is Father’s Day. T: When we realize how much our parents have done for us, every son / daughter should love and respect his / her parents, be good when they are old and grateful to them. So, how do you show love and respect for them? Can you give a good example? S5: To treat our parents politely and gently. We must be gentle and devoted towards our parents. We should not adopt rough and coarse attitude towards them, especially when they are old. We should not utter anything that might upset them, but be always

polite to them. S6: We should be virtuous children who have strong faith and an understanding of submission. T: Good! If you were married, would you love your parents less than you do now? Volunteer? S7: If I were married, maybe I would not have enough time to accompany them. But I would always phone them to communicate. I would try my best to spare time to visit them. S8: If I were married, I would love my parents more. Because I would understand them more, esp. when I have my own child. T: Yes. If parents believe their child has been disrespectful, what should they do about it? Volunteer? S9: I don’t think they should swear at their child. As a matter of fact, they should be more patient, use love to reclaim them and help them to remedy the bad behavior.

T: A good idea! What was the traditional attitude towards the emperor? S10: The traditional attitude towards the emperor is loyalty. T: Yes! What did the emperor do to keep his servants loyal to him? What happened to the servants who were not loyal? S11: The emperor constituted laws to keep his servants loyal to him. If the servants were not loyal, the emperor would kill them. T: Yes! Who decided whom the emperor’s children would marry? For what reasons were marriages arranged? S12: The emperor decided the persons who the emperor’s children would marry. The

marriages were arranged just for protecting the emperor’s ruling rights. For example, just like the picture on the right, the Princess Wencheng married Songtsen Gampo. T: You all did a good job! The play you are going to read in this unit is about an emperor of ancient Great Britain. Can you guess what it is? Ss: King Lear. Step II Pre-reading T:The play you are going to read in this unit is based on William Shakespeare’s King Lear, but it has been shortened and simplified. The language has been modernized and it is no longer written as poetry. Now glance quickly through Part 1 of the play and answer the following questions. I will give you 3 minutes. T:Time is up. List the characters who appear in this part of the play. Volunteer? T:You got it! Use the pictures that illustrate Part 1 of the play to predict what was going to happen? Volunteer? S3:Goneril and Regan would get the best part of their father’s kingdom. Cordelia would get nothing because she couldn’t describe her feelings with such fancy words as her two elder sisters’. T: You guessed it! Look at the words below. Check it after reading the Part 1 of the play. Step III Reading T: Now let’s read the passage quickly and check your prediction. I will give you three minutes to do it. I am sure you can find all the words in the play and check your prediction. Now let’s read the text again carefully. Before that, look at the questions in Exercise 1 on Page 14. While reading, try your best to find the answers to these questions. I will give you five minutes to do it. Five minutes later. T: Time is up. The first one, why does King Lear want to give away his kingdom?

Volunteer? S1: Because he is growing old and tired, and he wants to retire. T: You got it! The second one, how is he going to decide whom to give the best part of his kingdom to? Volunteer? S2: King Lear has divided the kingdom into three parts. For whichever of his daughters has for him the most devotion he will give to her the best part of everything he owns. T: Correct! Because he said “ Now my darling, my favourite, my Cordelia.”

The next one, what are the names of the men who want to marry King Lear’s youngest daughter? S5: The men’s names who want to marry King Lear’ youngest daughter are the king of the France and the Duke of Burgundy. T: You got it! Who tried to defend Cordelia? What happens to him when he speaks out?

S6: Kent tried to defend Cordelia. As a result, King Lear drove him away from the kingdom. T: You all did a good job.

Step III Comprehending T: We have known that there are seven characters mentioned in part 1 of the play. Look at Exercise 2 on Page 14. Here are some adjectives to describe these seven characters. Choose words from the box to complete the table below. Some words belong to more than one character. I will give you three minutes to do it.

Three minutes later. T: Time is up. Volunteer? S: King Lear is a hard-hearted, corrupt, hotheaded, bad-tempered and foolish king.

T: Got it! What about King Lear’s three daughters? S: Goneriland and Regan are deceitful, greedy, hard-hearted and cunning ladies. While Cordelia is an honest, truthful, respectful, innocent and lovely girl.

T: Terrific! How about Duke of Albany and Duke of Cornwall? S: Duke of Cornwall is a hard-hearted, deceitful and bad-tempered man, while Duke of Albany is an honest, truthful, loving and loyal gentleman. T: Exactly! What about Duke of Kent? S: Duke of Kent is an honest, respectful, loving, truthful and loyal nobleman. T: Well done! You all did a good job! Last unit, we’ve learned many words to describe someone’s character. Now, you can also use them to describe the main characters in the play. Thus, the audience may understand them more clearly. If there were enough time for the class, the students could prepare a role-play. T: You have known the story after reading Part 1, let’s do a role-play. One plays the king, one plays Regan, and another one plays Cordelia. The fourth plays the Duke of Kent and will interview the three characters to find out what they really think. Here are some questions to consider. I will give you 5 minutes to prepare. 5 minutes later.

Suggested answers: To King Lear: I divide my kingdom according to how much my daughters said they loved me because I am old and tired; the burden of government sits heavily on my shoulders; I don’t have much time to enjoy the life. I want to give my daughters my kingdom as presents. I don’t know who love me the most, so I will give to them the best part of everything I own according to their words. I believe them. I am sure their words represent their love to me.

To Regan: I am not honest in answer to the king. But I must say like this, I want to get the kingdom of my father. When I saw what happened to Cordelia, I did not show sympathy for her. Thus, I can get more from my father. The king behaved fairly. To Cordelia: I didn’t answer my father’s question the same way as my sisters because I think I couldn’t describe my feelings with such fancy words. I love my father as it is right and proper for a daughter to love her father. I love him in my heart. I don’t need

anything, but my father’s love. Now, I really don’t know what to do. I just want to make my father understand the truth. T: After the role-play discuss the questions on Page 15 in your group. Suggested answers: 1. These characters are true to life. The people in the constitutional monarchy (君主制国家) would behave in a similar way to any of these characters. And in some big companies, the staff members would behave in a similar way to their leaders like the daughters. 2. If I were King Lear, I would divide my kingdom according to their daily behavior but not their words.

Step IV Analyze T:Let’s analyze the text. Look at the slide. Here is a table including some questions about the play of King Lear. I will give you four minutes to have a discussion and then fill in the blanks. AUTHOR
