5.Teaching procedure:

Step 1 Pre-reading

Ask students what sports they like and share with them the teacher’s experience. Then watch a video about sports and answer the question ‘what sports can you see in the video?’

Pictures of sports included in the video are provided, like judo, golf, beach volleyball with the attempt to help students better understand these sports.

Finally, ask students what these sports have in common and what are the requirements for a sport to enter the Olympics, then smoothly lead to the passage one in project in the textbook. Step 2 While-reading 1.

Read the text quickly and try to answer the following two questions: 

What are three requirements of a sport to enter the Olympics? Suggested answer: a. a sport must have its own international association; b. a sport must be practiced by men in 75 countries on 4 continents or by women in 40 countries on 3 continents; c. in order for a new sport to be added, another sport must be dropped. Therefore, the added sport should have distinctive features or benefits to be qualified enough.

Which one is still trying to get into Olympics?

Wushu—Chinese martial arts

2.

Analyze the background information about Wushu and discuss whether it meets all those three requirements. For the first requirement: Wushu has its own international association called International Wushu Federation, which was founded in 1990. For the second requirement: Wushu is practiced by people in 120 countries on 5 continents.

And it is now very popular all around the world.

For the third requirement: Wushu has distinctive features and benefits: defend/protect oneself; be flexible; keep healthy; relax oneself; cultivate good qualities.

Based on the above mentioned background information, students could easily make a conclusion that Wushu meets all those three requirements.

Step 4 Post-reading

Write a speech: how to introduce Wushu to International Olympic Committee members. The following three parts should be included: 

Introduction: give greetings, tell them who you are and what is your purpose. 

Main body: use detailed information to support your idea with the background knowledge of association, popularity and benefits of Wushu. 

Conclusion: make a summary and mention your hope.
