Background Information 1. about the author Mark Twain, an American writer, novelist and humorist, published more than 30 books, hundreds of short stories and essays and gave lecture tours around the world throughout his career.

Mark Twain was born in Florida and spent his boyhood in Hannibal, Missouri, along the Mississippi River. Three of his most famous books describe people on this great river. They are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Life on the Mississippi. Indeed he loved the river so much that even his pen name is about the river. “Twain” is an old word for “two”. So, the phrase “mark twain” means that the water is two fathoms deep. Twain left school at the age of twelve to look for work. During his whole life, Mark Twain carried on many kinds of jobs. From 1864, he became a reporter and travelled in Europe. In the 1890s Mark Twain became very poor. To recover from the bankruptcy, he started a world lecture tour, during which one of his daughters died. The death of his wife and his second daughter darkened his later years. Mark Twain died on April 21, 1910. Behind the mask of humor and satire, his writing often criticized social morals, politics and human nature, making his literature a unique reflection of the American experience in the latter part of the nineteenth century. 2. about Twain’s masterpiece The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County (1865)《加拉维加县有名的跳蛙》

3. about the Million Pound Bank Note

The Bank of England once issued two notes of a million pounds, to be used for a special purpose connected with some public transaction with a foreign country. For some reason or other only one had been used and canceled; the other still lay in the Bank. Well, the brothers, chatting along, happened to get to wonder what might be the fate of a honest and intelligent stranger without friends and money but that million-pound bank-note. Brother A said he would starve to death; Brother B said he wouldn’t. Brother A said he couldn’t offer it at a bank or anywhere else, because he would be arrested on the spot. So they went on disputing till Brother B said he would bet twenty thousand pounds that the man would live thirty days. Another character Henry was a poor, honest and intelligent stranger. The two brothers handed Henry an envelope that contained £1,000,000 bank-note. Henry, dressed in rags, with nothing but a bank-note, got into a restaurant. He took the banknote to pay for the bill and asked for changes. The boss who looked down upon him at first changed his attitude completely. He flattered Henry. He treated Henry as an honored guest. Then Henry got into a tailor’s shop, the same thing happened. Henry drifted naturally into buying whatever he wanted, and asking for change. With the £1,000,000 bank-note, Henry owned the respect and fell in love with a girl, Portia. Everything went well having £1,000,000 bank-note on him. After a month, Brothers returned, to Henry’s surprise, one of them was Portia’s papa. He took the bank note back to the Bank of England and cashed it, then the Bank canceled it and made him a present of it, and he gave it to Henry and Portia at their wedding.
