Reading comprehension: The Dujiangyan Irrigation Project The Dujiangyan Irrigation Project has a long history,which dates back to the Qin Dynasty.More than 2000 years ago,the Mingjiang River often flooded the Chengdu agricultural area,as a result,the local farmers suffered a lot from the water disasters and it caused great losses and deaths.Then Li Bing,as a local governor of the Shu State,was appointed to solve the problems and expected to keep people away from the disasters.Therefore,Li Bing collected information and made a survey,in the end he designed this water control and irrigation dam,meanwhile organized thousands of local people to complete the great and challenging project,thus taking the fierce Mingjiang River under control and making good use of it.Due to the success and magic function of the project,local people could enjoy their life free from the floods and disasters.Even up to now,the irrigation project still has played an important role in controlling floods as well as water irrigation of Chengdu Plain.

In fact,the Dujiangyan Irrigation Project consists of 3 parts, namely Yuzui, Feishayan and Baopingkou.Yuzui which looks like a big fish,lying in the Mingjiang River,is designed to work as a watershed(分水岭) in order to divide the river into 2 parts:the inner river and the outer river,The inner stream is deep and narrow,while the outer stream is relatively shallow but wide.This special Structure ensures the inner river carries about 60% of the river’s flow into the irrigation system during the dry season.While the flooding season,this amount decreases to 40% to prevent people from flooding.As for Feishayan,it is actually a spillway(泄洪道) that transfer the sand and stones of the inner river into the outer one.The last part,Baopingkou,like a neck of a bottle ,is used to bring water into the inner river from the Mingjiang River. To sum up, the project makes a great contribution to the development of Dujiangyan.No wonder it is regarded as one of the greatest wonders in Chinese science and technology.It’s well
