Teaching Design Grammar — The Attributive Clause (I) (who, whom, which, that, whose) I. Teaching aims: 1. Help students understand what the Attributive Clause is and its function. 2. Enable students to use relative pronouns (who, whom, which, that, whose) in the Attributive Clause properly. 3. Encourage students to express their love to their school using the Attributive Clause. II. Teaching important and difficult points: Enhance students’ proficiency and accuracy in using the relative pronouns to use the Attributive Clauses. III. Teaching methods: Task-based teaching method; Audio-lingual method; Cooperative learning; Group discussion

IV. Teaching steps:

Step I:Lead in

1. Lead in the topic by showing the pictures about military training.

T: At the beginning , let’s enjoy the unforgettable moments in the military training.

S:....

T:

Do you think our military training is meaningful ?

Did you learn something from the military training?

what did you learn from the military training?

S: ....

T:

So we may say “The military training that /which we received was meaningful”

The spirit which/that we learnt from the military training was cooperation.

The students who are practising marching are from Class 15.

The coach who trained us was not very serious.

The man whose uniform is different from us is our coach.

The girl who delivered a speech on the stage was Wang Siyue.

Wang Siyue is a girl whom we admire a lot

I have to say that all of you are shinning stars in the military training. And I believe:

Nothing in the world is difficult for one who sets his mind to it.

Step 2:Approaching Grammar

Present more proverbs to let the students enjoy and approach the Attributive Clause. 1. Nothing in the world is difficult for one who sets his mind to it.

2. God helps those who help themselves.

3. He who laughs last laughs best.

4. All that glitters is not gold.

5. He who doesn’t

reach the Great Wall is not a true man.

1

Take two sentences for example, help the Ss to understand the structure and function of the Attributive Clause.

1.He who doesn’t

reach the

Great Wall

is not a true man.

Antecedent (先行词): He

Relative word (关系词): who 2.God helps those who help themselves.

Antecedent (先行词): God

Relative word (关系词): who

Step 3 :Discovering and Summary Present more

examples to approach the Attributive Clause , help the Ss make a summary about the structure of the Attributive Clause and master the rules of choosing the relative nouns properly. 3.

He is the man (who/that) lives next door. 4.

He is a student whose home is far away from here. 5. She is the teacher (whom/who/that) we talked to.

6. Where is the book (which/that) I bought last week?

7. This is a school (which/that) has a long history. The Attributive Clause

Relative pronouns: who, whom, which, that, whose who, that Subject (主语) people who, whom, that Object (宾语) (可省) whose Attribute (定语)

which, that Subject (主语) things which, that Object (宾语) (可省) whose Attribute (定语)

The usage of relative pronouns:

1. 连接主从句

2.指代先行词

3.在定语从句中作句子成分

Step 4:Practicing Using I

1.The man _________is strict with us is Mr. Yan.

2.The lady ____________ I always meet on the school campus

5. We shall never forget the days___________we spent together.

Step 5:

Practice using I I

The Attributive Clause is often used in in our daily life, for eg, when you talk about your

friends, teachers, or family members. you can use it .

Besides, when you talk about something, you can also use it. So can we describe our

2

school with the Attributive Clause?

Let’s have a try? ok ?

The teacher present some pictures and some key words,

motivate the Ss to describe the school with the Attributive Clause.

5 --7 minutes later, the Ss are asked to present their

school in different forms, it can be a speech, report or an interview , even a webcast(网络直播)

Step 5:

Show time

The Ss present their

school in different forms, it can be a speech,

report or an interview , even a webcast(网络直播).

The teacher evaluate their performance timely.

Step 5:

Homework

1. Write a short passage to describe our school

within no less than 100 words

(at least 5 sentences in the Attributive Clause) 2. Find out more Attributive Clause around you.

Step 6 . Teaching reflection

For me, I want to make grammar teaching full of love and fun. Therefore, there are two clues.

One clue is love. The teacher begins this class with pictures about military training to stimulate their curiosity and interest to learn more about the Attributive Clause. Meanwhile,

develop their love for their class, classmates, teachers. The other clue is self discovery and cooperative learning. Students work in groups to discover the usage of relative pronouns and sum up. They also cooperate with each other to present their description about their school. The teacher creates an atmosphere to direct students to master the usage of the Attributive Clause while they are feeling the deep love for the school .Students are the real masters of the class.

In a word, by the drive of the students’ emotion, by means of cooperation, with the help of peers and under the guidance of the teacher, students will have a good understanding of the Attributive Clause and want to learn more.
