Introduction

Cloning is a controversial topic which will become more important as the years pass. So one of the aims of this unit for us is to be able to examine and discuss some of the issues associate with cloning. (2)

I will ask some students to talk about something

that they know about cloning. I will ask them some questions.

1.Have you ever seen the film Jurassic Park? Do people like this film? What animals do you see in the film? Are they real dinosaurs? 2.Do you like dinosaurs?

Can you see them in our real life?

Why?

Step 2 Fast reading. (10m)

1)Scanning: Let the students get the main idea and answers to the questions. 1.Why should not you clone an extinct animal unless there is enough diversity in the group? Suggested answer: There will not be enough genetic variation (遗传变异)in the group to be able to resist new illnesses. 2.

Why is it wrong to clone an extinct animal if it would have to live in a zoo? Suggested answer: It is not a good idea to clone an animal that would have to live in a zoo because it is not a suitable habitat to develop and increase its numbers.The zoo is not a natural environment for a wild animal. 3.

Why can’t you clone the DNA of animals that have been extinct longer than 10,000 years? Suggested answer: The DNA of animals more than 10,000 years old is not suitable for cloning ,for it can’t survive so long.

1) Read the passage again, and then decide the following statements are true (T) or false (F). 1.Scientists are still experimenting with cloning mammals because they think it can make money. 2.The animals that have disappeared from the earth, like dinosaurs, can be brought back to life through cloning. 3.If we can clone any extinct animals, we should let them live in a zoo.

Give some reasons why it is either impossible or unsuitable to clone extinct animals. Reason 1: You need perfect DNA Reason 2:There is not enough diversity for cloned animals to overcome new diseases.

Reason 3:It would be unfair to clone any extinct animals if they would have to live in a zoo.

2. Write a short passage about something you know about cloning. Design of the blackboard The left part will be used to write teaching aims and something related to the passage. It will be reserved for the whole class. The right part will be explanations, I will write some sentence of the words, phrases and structures to explain their meanings.
