Teaching Design for Reading in Unit 2 Module 4 Unit 1 Reading Analysis of the teaching material This period deals with the reading passage of this unit. It is a speech written to introduce the theme of sports events. Students will learn about the history of the Olympics, about how a sport gets into the Olympics and about fair play in sports. This passage is a speech which needs to be analyzed in a different approach. In a word, the passage covers almost every aspect of Olympics. After the students read this passage, they will have a general understanding of its culture and spirit. During the period, teachers should strengthen the reading strategy by means of practicing and giving more reading materials after class. Teaching aims and requirements

1. To strengthen the reading strategies: how to read a speech.

2. To finish a speech about Olympics.

3. To enable the students to learn to talk about sport’s significance and the spirit of sports

Teaching procedures Step 1. Lead in Ask the students watch a video about an Olympics’ basketball game and answer the following questions. The following questions can be asked: Do you know what sport is it? What’s his name is the video?

What kind of sport event is it?

Ask the students to answer some basic knowledge about Olympic Games.(Multiple choice questions) Step 2. Reading strategies 1.

Skimming First of all, the students need to skim the text and figure out the writing style of the article. And the teacher will introduce the definition and feature of the speech.

Fast reading Secondly, the students should get the idea of what skimming and scanning are about. And summarize the main idea of the certain paragraph.

Step 3. While-reading Task 1 After skimming and summarize, the students have got some idea of the meaning and words in the passage. Then introduce the history of Olympic Game. After the introduction, students will be given 3 questions to think, and to infer the first significance of Olympics.

Task 2 1. Let the students discuss in groups after finding out contributions of famous athletes. 2. After the discussion, students are aimed to figure out the second layer significance, which is the main point of this class---the spirit of sports.

Task 3 Critical thinking. Through this part, the student would have a more comprehensive understanding of the sport and its culture. Step 4. Speech

Topic: The power of sport. Finally I will organize a speech, which is the writing style of this article, helping students to master the skill of a speech. What’s more, this topic will contain the significance of sport, which could help them to go over the text.
