Teaching Plan Purpose: This lesson is intended for students who have few ideas about Part 3 story-retelling of the listening and speaking test of the national matriculation English test. The teacher aims to show the students some techniques of note-taking , that is, how to take note and what to take down and involve them in a judging their peers’

performance so that they could realize that grasping the most important information is the key to retelling a story.

Teaching Procedure: 1.

Warming-up exercise: Invite a student to read a short story in front of the class and ask the rest of the class to take down the useful information to retell the story. Then show the passage on the PPT slide and ask the students to fill in the blanks with the information taken.

Many years ago, ____________ lived in a small German village. Many years ago, a poor family lived in a small German village. Although their situation seemed hopelessly, two of the children, Peter and Mike, both had a dream of becoming an artist . After many long discussions, they reached an agreement. They would toss a coin and the loser would work in the nearby factory to support his brother while he attended art school. Finally, Peter won and went off to the city.

2. Ask the students to use the words filled in the blanks to retell the story, and ask the students to think about the question:

what is the most important information to retell a story.

3.Introduce to students some information of oral English test in the high school entrance examination and the story-retelling exercise.

My Mum was having a lot of trouble with her skin, so she went to see her doctor. And

the next morning, he telephoned to give mom a list of things that she should not eat. My mum carefully wrote all the things down on a piece of paper, which she then left beside the telephone when she went out. When she got back home two hours later, she found my dad waiting for her. He said, “I found your shopping list beside the telephone, so I went down to the shops and bought everything you had written down.”

6. Ask the students finish a story-retelling exercise and ask a student to retell the story. The teacher involve the rest of class to judge the student’s performance by providing them some grading criteria.

A Black Cloud

After leaving a village, Tom was driving to London. A strange noise made him stop./ He got out and examined the car carefully, but he found nothing wrong. So he started driving again. / The noise became louder and louder. Tom looked back quickly and saw a great black cloud following the car. /When he stopped by a farm, a farmer told him that a queen bee must be hidden in his car, because there were thousands of bees following him./ Tom drove away as quickly as he could. He thought it would be the best way to escape./

After one hour’s hard driving, he arrived in London. He parked his car outside a hotel and went in to have a drink. /Several minutes later, he finished his drink and went out. He was surprised to find that his car was covered with bees. /Then he called the police and explained what had happened. The police called a beekeeper./ In a short time, the beekeeper arrived. He found the queen bee near the wheel at the back of the car. /Finally the beekeeper put the queen bee and the other bees in a large box and took them home./
