Lead-in

A short dialogue is used to introduce the topic of this lesson -- direct speech and reported speech.

Step 2

Presentation 1.Definition of direct speech and reported speech Ask students to compare the sentences in direct speech and in reported speech, and then find the differences between them.

2.Changes from direct speech to reported speech (1)Changes in sentence structure ①an object clause ②an infinitive phrase (2)Changes in personal pronouns (3)Changes in tenses (4)Changes in adverbials of time and place

(5)Changes in other cases In this part, students will learn that we can change direct speech into indirect speech by changing what has been said to an object clause or an infinitive phrase, and there are also changes in personal pronouns, tenses and adverbials of time and places.

Step 3

Summary

We do not change the tense in the following situations: 1.It is a fact that does not change over time. Eg: The teacher said to the students, 'Light travels at great speed.'

The teacher told the students that light travels at great speed. 2.It is someone’s daily habit. Eg: He said to the doctor, 'I smoke two packs every day.'

He told the doctor that he smokes two packs every day. 3.It is an event in history, or it is something that happened at a certain time in the past. Eg: The teacher said, 'World War II ended in 1945.'

The teacher said that World War II ended in 1945. 4.It uses modal verbs such as must, ought to, used to and had better.

Eg: She said to me,'You must hurry up.'

She said that I must hurry up.

Step 5

Production

Task: Be a reporter. 1.Our school held a charity sale days ago. Some students had a discussion about it. Your headmater wanted to know whether students liked it or not. Can you tell him what these students said? 2.Students are required to discuss with their partners and then one will be chosen to make a presentation. 3.The rest students need to find out if there are any mistakes of the presentation.

4.The teacher give comments on their performance.
