Teaching process Step1.

Warm up

1. Greetings

2. The teacher introduces one of her friends--Nancy, talk about their likes and dislikes, then show several pictures of horror films which are Nancy’s dislikes. Teach the word “horror”and lead them to read the word one by one.

Then introduce:She is afraid of horror films.Using the TPR technique.

(T writes down “ horror films” on the blackboard) Step2. Presentation

1. The teacher introduces some things that Nancy is afraid of with the pictures. (Monsters / ghosts)

Then teacher asks students ”Are you afraid of them?”

What are you afraid of ?

(The teacher writes down “ afraid of ”on the blackboard.)

Lead students to read by groups and understand the phrases.

2. The teacher introduces what she is afraid of...

the hot food ! (T show the pictures and do the facial expression)

It’s so hot!

(The teacher writes down “ hot food ”on the blackboard.)

T let students to pay attention to the “o”, [o,o--hot/ hot, hot food]. Students read together, read by groups.

3. T: Well, now let’s listen and guess, what’s it?

T plays sound A & B.

Students guess.

T: Yes, there are dogs, and they are very big dogs!

I’m afraid of big dogs! Maybe you are not.

What is the other animal?

Students guess.

T: The rats, I’m afraid of the rats, too.

I’m scared. What about you? Let two students to talk about their feelings. (The teacher writes down “ rats, big dogs”on the blackboard.)

T: Let’s see the last animal. There’s a riddle. Let’s try.

“It has eight feet,

It can spin a web,

It eats insects.”

T: They are spiders. Very good!

Sport - Spider, introduce /b/, then read together.

4. T shows a picture, and say “It is very cold, right? It is also very dark! I am afraid of the cold and the dark.” (The teacher writes down “ the dark/ the cold ”on the blackboard.)

Then introduces the little baby.The baby is afraid of sleeping alone.

(The teacher writes down “ sleeping alone ”on the blackboard.)

T: For example:

sleep alone

live alone

stay alone

wait alone

(show these phrases with some pictures) So “alone” means only one person, only you.

5. Let’s play a game: What’s missing?

T shows several pictures, and let students guess what’s missing. After that, give the corresponding feedback.

6. Practice time.

Open the books, look at the pictures in Part 3a. Let’s listen and draw lines.

T plays the mp3 two times and then check the answers with students. Read these sentences one by one.

7. T: For me, there are lots of things I’m afraid of.

But there are some things I’m not afraid of.

I’m not afraid of talking in English.

I’m not afraid of listening to English.

(The teacher writes down “I am not afraid of talking in English”on the blackboard.)

I’m not afraid of tomato soup.

T asks a student to filling the blanks. And teach them tomato soup. Step3. Practice

1. T asks three or four students to make sentences with the phrase “I am afraid of.../ I am not afraid of...” give them some tips.

2. T lead students to conclude the grammar.

3. Pair work.

Ask several groups to give some examples

A: What are you afraid of?

B: I am afraid of _______. Step4. Consolidation 1.The teacher gives students several words, let them make sentences by using these words so as to consolidate what they have learned in this class. After that, give them feedback and review the usage of the verb “be”. 2. Let’s chant. Step 5. Homework

The teacher asks if they like coming through adventures, such as climbing up the mountain, living in the jungle, bungee, and asks how many adventures do they know, what are they? Talk with your friends.
