encourage students to follow Eliza and be brave enough to change themselves. Teaching procedures:

Step1 Lead-in 1. check the homework: a review of Act one fateful meeting

Purpose: help students be familiar with what they have learned in Act 1. A sample:

Eliza Doolittle, a dirty flower girl with poor phonetics, happened to meet Professor Higgins, an expert in phonetics, while hiding from the rain. When Eliza was talking with a gentleman, Higgins always watched her and took notes, which worried her a lot, for she thought he was a policeman

in disguise. She went up and asked

anxiously

what it was for. Professor Higgins read the notes

Eliza andaccurately placed

where she was born. What was going between them drew the attention

of Colonel Pickering, who came to meet Higgins. Higgins greeted him and said that once educated to speak properly, Eliza could pass herself off in three months as a duchess at an ambassador’s garden party. After that Higgins threw a handful of money into her basket and left with Pickering, leaving Eliza in delight and amazement.

Step 3 Intensive-reading

1. Have the students read the play carefully and then answer the following questions. (1) Do you think Eliza is very ambitious? (2)

Why did Pickering fancy himself? (3)

What habits did Eliza have? (4)

What do you think Higgins would have to do to change Eliza into a lady?

(After a few minutes). Now answer my questions.

Suggested answers: (1) Yes, I think so. Because she still likes to learn even if Higgins treats her rudely.

(2) Because he can pronounce twenty-four distinct vowel sounds. (3) She has never had a bath in her life; not over her whole body. (4) In order to have Eliza make a big change, Higgins has to teach her the alphabet.

2. Listen to the tape and fill in the blanks in the passage, and then read aloud.

The next day, Professor Higgins and Colonel Pickering were sitting deep in conversation about how many vowel sounds they could pronounce when a girl came to knock at the door. Maid Pearce showed her in. But the moment Higgins found that she was the girl they saw the other day, he wanted to let her away. Eliza begged to stay and study pronunciation from him. Pickering came in time to help and made a bet with Higgins that if Higgins could pass her off as a lady, he would say he was the greatest teacher alive and he would pay for the lessons. Higgins compromised but asked Eliza to take off her horrible clothes and have a bath. While Eliza was sobbing for the disgusting thing in her mind, the two gentlemen planned to teach her from alphabet.

Step 4

Listening, reading and discussing

Purpose: to get students to learn to talk about the play. 1. Read Act 5 Afterwards on Page 74 and answer the following questions: ①

Why does she throw the shoes at him? ②

Why does Eliza get upset when Henry does not congratulate her? ③

Why does Henry get upset when he hears Eliza will marry Freddy?

Suggested answers: ①

Because Henry looks down upon her, which deeply hurts her. She is very angry.

②

Because in Eliza’s opinion, it is she that tries her best to make other people attracted to her. ③

In fact, he loves Eliza, I think.

2. Discussion (work in pairs and then report to class their opinions): ①. Who Do you think Eliza should marry, Henry or Freddy? ②. If Eliza loves Henry and marries him, do you think he will become a good husband?

(About ten minutes later) ask the students to present their answers.

Sample answers:

I think Eliza will marry neither Freddy nor Henry. After all Freddy does not know the past of Eliza. If one day Freddy learns about that, he will not accept all of this. He belongs to the upper class and maybe in his deep heart he looks down upon Eliza. As for Henry, I think he is very greedy and proud. He only treats Eliza as his bet. He only wants to prove he is capable, although at last he falls in love with Eliza. However, when he truly marries Eliza, the selfishness will again appear. He will not become a good husband. As a matter of fact, Eliza has become a confident girl after experiencing these things. Maybe she will find her true love at last.
