Step I Lead-in

T: Last period, we talked about the Greek Story, and we know the artist in it is named Pygmalion. Today, we’ll learn the play which is an adaptation of this story. Although there is no character called Pygmalion in the play, it is based the same theme. Step II Introducing the author and the film The author--George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) An Irish dramatist, literary critic, a socialist spokesman, and a leading figure in the 20th century theater.

main works: Widowers' Houses(1892) Man and Superman (1902), Major Barbara (1905)

Pygmalion(1912) T: In Shaw’s life, he wrote more than forty plays. Pygmalion is one of his most classic works. It was made into a film called My Fair Lady, and the famous actress Audrey Hepburn stars in it. If you haven’t seen it, you should watch it when you are free.It’s a wonderful film. Step III Reading Try to know about the four main characters with the whole class. Ask the Ss to read the play quickly and tell whether the following statements are true or false. 1. Eliza was selling some flowers when Higgins first met her. (T) 2. She succeeded in selling some dead flowers to Higgins for some small change. (F) 3. Higgins wrote down her name and address. (F) 4. Higgins was good at judging people from their own speech. (T) 5. Higgins could earn a lot for his job. (T) 6. Higgins promised to find her a good job. (F) 7. Discussion in pairs Ask the students to try to help Eliza improve her English. Together with their partners, correct all the sentences in term of grammar, spelling, etc.

Role-play reading 1.Ask the students to listen to the text and imitate carefully, paying more attention to the pronunciation, intonation, stress and tone of the characters. 2.Ask the students to practice reading the lines with different parts in groups of four. 3.Ask some groups to present their shows in class.

Homework 1.Ask the students to role play Act one with their partners in their group. 2.Do the exercises 1-4 on P30-31
