1. Listen to Part 1 of the tape and try to understand “the wastepaper basket” diagram on the right and fill in the layers.

2. Listen to Part 1 of the tape again and answer the following questions. (1). How many dating methods has Richard mentioned?

What are they? (2). How does the wastepaper basket help us understand the layer method? (3). Suppose you are the archaeologist, Richard Leakey, you are invited to make a speech in public to explain the layer method.

3. Listen to Part 2 and complete the passage below.
