I. Teaching objectives

By the end of this lesson, the students are supposed to be able to:

 Know names of different outdoor activities.

Step 1 Lead-in

It’s autumn now and the weather is not too cold or too hot. It is good time for outdoor activities. What outdoor activities would you like to try?

【Purpose】Lead students into the topic of outdoor activities.

Step 2 A guessing game

Present several pictures with only parts of them seen by students or description of outdoor activities and have students guess what activities they are.

1. Swimming is very p______ in summer because people feel c___ in the water. (popular, cool)

2. Cycling is quite e______, but you must be c______, or you may get hurt. (exciting, careful)

3. If you do not know how to ride ah_____, riding will be very d_______ and d_____ for you. (horse, dangerous, difficult)

Step 3 Presentation

1. Finish Part A, writingcorrect letters in the boxes.

2. Explain the structure “go + v-ing”, and ask students to make a list of outdoor activities they know.

e.g. go fishing, go walking, go shopping, go skating, go diving, go camping,

gohiking, go cycling, go running, go jogging, go skiing, go swimming

3. T makes a dialogue with one student and then students work in pairs and make similar ones.

A: What outdoor activity would you like to try?

B: I want to go ____.

A: Why do you like it? /What do you like about _______?

B: Because it’s _____.

【Purpose】Make students master names of outdoor activities and the structure “go + v-ing”. The dialogue can help set up a scaffolding for Part B.

Step 4 Practice

1. Daniel and Amy are talking about outdoor activities. Listen to the conversation in Part B and find out what outdoor activities they like.

Step 5 Comic strip

1. Present thefirst picture of Comic strip and have students guess what they are doing.

2. Listen to the dialogue and answer two questions.

(1) Does Eddie like going hiking? Why?

(2) What does Eddie ask Hobo to do for him?

3. Ask students to read the dialogue and answer the questions.

(1) Who complains too much?

(2) Why does he complain?

(3) What does Hobo say about the bag?

(4) Is the bag heavy?

(5) What do you think of Eddie and Hobo? Why?

4. Ask students to read and act out the dialogue.

Don’t take too many things or you will complain too much.

【Purpose】By listening and reading, students can know the information of the dialogue. By discussion, students can show their own opinions about Eddie and Hobo. Besides, students can learn what to do when doing outdoor activities.

Step 6 Summary

1. Work in groups and discuss what should we notice in order to enjoy outdoor activities completely?

e.g.

 Safety first.

 Wear comfortable clothes and a pair of sports shoes.

 Don’t have cold drinks at once after exercising.

 Do warm-up activities to avoid muscle injury(防止肌肉拉伤).

 Do what teachers told orget professional skills (获得专业技能).

2. Read ten thousand books and travel ten thousand miles.

Try more outdoor activities, learn more about the world.

【Purpose】By discussion and the teacher’s introduction, students can learn more about what to notice and the meaning ofoutdoor activities.

Recite the dialogues in Comic strip and Part B.

A Walk in the Woods

You will begin your walk in the car park. From here, the path goes along next to a stone wall for a short way. You will turn through an archway and walk into the woods. As you walk along this path, you are going to see little blue flowers.

You will arrive at a clearing. You will need to walk across the clearing and around the lake to find the path again. Walk past the old house and under the archway. The path will cross over a river. Now, you will be able to rest and eat at the picnic tables.

From here, you will be able to walk along a raised wooden path over some marshland. You will see many birds and flowers along the way.
