M4U2 Reading The Olympic Games 9th May, 2019 Teaching Aims:

To read and understand a speech and improve reading skills To know more about the Olympic Games To appreciate athletes’ good qualities and to learn how to overcome difficulties in life

Teaching Procedures: Step 1: Lead-in 1.

Talk about the sport events in Olympics (with video clips) 2.

Quiz on the knowledge of Olympics Step 2: Fast reading 1.

Enable students to understand the genre: speech 2.

Ask students to scan the speech and answer two questions. 3.

Help students to understand the structure and main idea of the speech. Step 3: Detailed reading 1.

Ask students to read paragraph 1 and do a T&F question. 2.

Let students listen to tape recording of paragraph 2-4 and complete a table.

Let students match photos with the athletes in paragraph 5-8 and do a group work preparing a speech on the introduction of each athlete. 4.

Ask students to pay attention to the hard work behind the glory and make comments on some good qualities that athletes have. 5.

Ask students to translate speaker’s comment on the athletes in paragraph 9. Step 4: Writing 1.

Ask students to reflect on what attitude they should take when encountering

drawbacks in life. 2.

Ask students to write a poster card to athletes on how their Olympic spirits

encourage and guide students’ daily life. Step 5: Homework:

Finish the exercises on workbook.
