Imitate and Recite A sentence.
Step 2 A Vocabulary Game: Parts of Speech Game-Story Blanks.
On The Loose
written by Jane On the news last night, there was a(n) unreasonable story about a(n) dinosaurs on the loose. Apparently the dinosaurs had escaped from Jurassic Park and roamed the city shouting at scared children and conservative adults. Then, as terrified city-goers fled, the dinosaurs climbed an opera and took a nap! As it slept, a(n) conductor snuck up on it and captured it with a chorus. People objected as the dinosaurs was put in a cage and taken shortly back to Jurassic Park. Some people might have thought it was cool to see a real-live dinosaurs up-close. I am OK with just seeing it on the news!
Step 3 Reading: Want to copy a puppy? If you’ve ever had a dog, you know just how deep a connection you can develop with “man’s best friend”. But a dog has a much shorter life span–
about 12 to 15 years long –
than humans, which means every dog owner has to go through the heartbreaking moment when their loving pet passes away.
Why not make a clone of that dog then? This is the solution offered by a South Korean company, Sooam Biotech Research Foundation. The company has successfully cloned at least 400 dogs, mostly for US customers, ever since it pioneered the technique in 2005. Now, Sooam
Biotech is planning to introduce their business to UK dog owners, offering them dogs that look just like their lost ones.
Meanwhile, another dog is selected to supply an egg. Researchers then replace the DNA in the egg with that from the skin cell and implant the egg into the womb of a female dog. The egg grows into a puppy over the following two months. To clone a dog, researchers first need to take a skin cell from a living dog or one that has just died. The whole process takes less than a day, but it comes at a shockingly high price – around £63,000 (614,000 yuan). But if you can’t afford it now, you can also save the cells in a laboratory and access them at a later date.
Just like identical twins of humans, they share the exact same DNA but there will still be small differences between them. “The spots on a Dalmatian clone will be different, for example,” Insung Hwang, head of Sooam Biotech, told The Guardian. However, as magical as cloning might sound, there is no guarantee that the cloned dog will be a perfect replica of the original one.
Dog owners will also have to accept the fact that personality is not “clone-able”. Apart from genes, personality is also determined by upbringing and environment, which are both “random elements [that] cloning technologies simply cannot overcome”, Professor Tom
Kirkwood at Newcastle University, UK, told The Telegraph. Perhaps bringing our dogs back with cloning is not the best way to remember them after all. Kirkwood, a dog owner himself, pointed out: “An important aspect of our relationship with them is coming to terms with the pain of letting go.”
1.
According to the article, Sooam Biotech Research Foundation is offering a service that will ____. A. help dog owners love their dogs more
B. help dogs give birth to more puppies C. make copies of pet dogs
D. give pet dogs an “identical” twin
2. Which of the following statements about dog cloning is TRUE according to the article? A. Dog cloning technology hadn’t been put into practice until recently.
B. Dog cloning is very expensive and usually takes several months to complete.
C. Dog cloning is very popular among US and UK pet owners.
D. Cloned dogs might develop different habits and characteristics even if they look very similar. 3. Which of the following shows the correct order of the dog cloning process?
a.
an egg is taken from another dog b.
a skin cell is taken from the pet dog and saved in a laboratory
c.
the egg is placed in the womb of a female dog d.
the DNA of the egg is replaced by the DNA from the skin cell

B. adbce
C. bacde
D. badce 4.We can learn from the article that Kirkwood ______ dog cloning. A.
disapproves of
B. supports
C. is afraid of
D. is curious about
Step 4 Opinions on Cloning
Keys:
People differ greatly in cloning technique. Some people are in favor of its development, for they believe it will be bound to benefit us. On the contrary, others find that it could raise a storm of moral questions. In addition, laws should be made to forbid doing research into human cloning. However, in my opinion, cloning will pay off on assumption that all undertake to use it properly.
Step 5 Listening
Is cloning cruel? Listen and see whether you agree with Xiao Qing or Rachel. Task1 Read these statements before listening. Tick those that you hear. 1
Cloning will bring dead pets to life. 2
There were 627 experiments before Dolly was successfully cloned. 3
Cloning may help cure serious illnesses. 4
It is a dead end。
5
Dolly the sheep was “middle-aged” when she was born. 6
So your grandmother would be able to start her life all over again and live much longer.
Task 2 Listen to the tape again and work with a partner to fill in the chart.
Rachel’s ideas about cloning
1.
to animals Xiao Qing’s ideas about cloning
1.Scientists are doing a
job 2.
makes them do
things
3.it is a “
”
4. clone born at age of “
”
5.
the species 2.
may bring back
animals to life 3. problems because it is a
science 4. scientists need
5. it may provide
for illnesses
Step 6 Discussion--Whose ideas do you agree with? Get ready to have a class discussion. Think about the reasons for your point of view. Use your own ideas as well as those in the text. These words and phrases on page 18 may be useful for you during the discussion:
That’s a good idea.
How can you believe that?
That’s a great idea!
I cannot accept your argument because…
I support… because…
No, I can’t agree with… because…
I agree with…because….
I would like to agree with you but…
Your argument has convinced me because…
I don’t care for your ideas because…
Your ideas sound very encouraging to me.
No, that is not reasonable because….
Step 7 Homework : write a passage about My Opinions of Cloning
Listening text IS CLONING CRUEL? Xiao Qing and Rachel Brown are discussing whether cloning is cruel to the animals.
RB: Xiao Qing, do you think cloning is cruel? XQ: What do you mean by that? The scientists are doing a wonderful job and soon they may be able to bring back extinct animals or ever people’s favorite pets back to life. RB: Yes, Qing, I know. But doesn’t that seem strange to you? Is it worth it? It took 276 experiments before Dolly was successfully cloned. Think of all those live cells and eggs that died in order for Dolly to be born. I don’t approve of that!
XQ: But Mary, be reasonable. Isn’t it always like that with a new science? This is the way you learn to do things better. It’s just that this one deals with living things. RB: I suppose so — but they make the animals do unnatural things. One poor cow was made to give birth to a bison. What was the poor creature to think when is saw its baby? XQ: I don’t quite understand why so many people are against cloning. I think the scientists need a little encouragement. They have done some amazing things and think of the benefits. Producing animals that are an exact copy of the original may help medical science produce medicines or even organs for serious illnesses. RB: Yes, I’ve heard all that. I agree with it but I don’t agree with the methods. I don’t think cloning is good for animals. XQ: Why not? RB: Well, I think it’s a dead end. Dolly the sheep was “middle-aged” when she was born because her DNA came from a middle-aged “mother”. Cloning your grandmother would mean the new baby started life as an old lady. XQ: Are you sure? I never thought of that! RB: And it also weakens the species. Clones mean there is less variety in the species and so illnesses will become more common and the animals may die out. XQ: Oh dear! And that was just what you and I were trying to avoid. I see I shall have to look at this whole cloning questing again!
