Compare football & soccer. 两者之间差别的来历：soccer是美国人为足球运动特别命名的，用来区别在美国被称为football的橄榄球。现在football一词的官方色彩越来越浓厚，目前的形势是将soccer一词废除。最为典型的例子就是一些国家足协将其官方名称中的soccer一词改为了国际更常见的football，而现在全球把足球仍然称为soccer的国家就只有美国和加拿大等极少数的国家了。所以在美国电影中足球仍被称为soccer，但在其他国家基本不会用soccer，而用football来称呼足球，《足球周刊》也把自己的英文名由soccer weekly改为了football weekly。
