Unit 2
Cloning 武汉市第十二中学
马育林
Analysis of teaching material Since the cloning technique is difficult to understand, students may find it hard to express and describe the procedure of cloning. So the emphasis is on enabling students to have certain knowledge of cloning. Students should be able to describe the cloning procedure with the help of pictures, and to understand reading and listening materials related to cloning. Main structure of designed teaching material Some teaching materials in the text are out-dated, and the lack of audio material makes the class dull and boring. So I collect variant complementary materials to enrich students’
vocabulary and sentence structures. And each part is acting as a stepping stone for the next one. All the activities together are combined into a complete circle. As for the final aim, students can improve their listening, speaking and writing ability.
1.
Warming up& review Before the class begins, play a short video clip to help students have a rough understanding of cloning, Dolly the sheep. Using simple questions helps students to review the context of the first reading passage. This part acts as a test for the upcoming oral expression part. 2.
Review & describe: How does cloning work? Students should be able to describe the main procedure of cloning. The technical will be presented to the students. The aim is not to test students’ related vocabulary but to focus on testing the understanding of cloning technique. This part acts as a bride for finding the difference in cloning technique in the movie.
3.
Audio-visual Task. After the previous illustration about cloning technique, play a video clip to further explain and help students understand cloning in a more vivid way. The video clip not only can help students understand the technique but also provides information for the next task--blank filling. Comparing the two different cloning techniques, raise a question for students to think about. The question then acts as a bridge for the reading activity. 4.
Reading. Since the reading material is rather straightforward. Only two questions need to be answered. One is general, and the other is more specific. The aim of this part is not improving students’ reading skills, but to practice their ability to obtain information through logical thinking. The following production is based on the answer to the specific question. 5.
Production Introduce some extinct animals, and presents their description and characteristics. Considering the given information from the reading passage, students can roughly conclude whether these animals can be brought back to life. After making sure students have fully comprehended cloning technique, ask students to make a poster.
Unit 2
Cloning 1.
Video&Review
The word "cloning" means __________________________.
___________ was cloned in the reading passage.
___________ is the easiest one to clone.
Is it possible to clone extinct animals? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________
2.
Review & Describe: How does cloning work ? yolk---the core
egg white----the cell
Which one will the cloned sheep look like?
Do we have to use 3 sheep in the process of cloning? When cloning Dolly, Sheep B provided the genetic information, the core, and sheep A offered the cell to hold the genetic information. Next the embryo was put into sheep C, the carrier of the clone. Then came Dolly.
A1:
B, cause it provides the genetic information

Jurassic park is a 1993 American science-fiction adventure film. In the movie, the Jurassic Park is the theme park where a small team of genetic scientists have created a wildlife park of cloned dinosaurs. Unlike Dolly the sheep, scientists use a drop of blood instead of a cell to bring various dinosaurs back to life.
