I. Teaching aims and learning objectives：

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to: 1. learn about some unusual things; 2. talk about amazing things with new sentence patterns.

II. Teaching contents：

1. New words and phrases: same, birth, earth, back, fat, fact, amazing, times, bone, the same size, from birth, in the back of, stop doing sth. 2. New structures: Fish sleep with their eyes open.

Our nose and ears never stop growing.

The sun is about 1,300,000 times larger than the Earth.

III. Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty：

1. The usage of “with” as adverbial.

2. The usage of “times” in comparison.

3. The difference between “stop doing” and “stop to do”.

4. How to describe something amazing.

IV. Teaching procedures Comic strip Step 1 Lead-in T: First, let’s watch a video and answer: What can the parrot do?

Step 2

Presentation

1. Present Ss a picture that surprises all the students, like the pictures about amazed people and amazing animals, and ask Ss about their feelings. Look at this picture. How do you feel when you see such a picture? 2. Tell the Ss that our world is full of amazing things and write the new word “amazing” on the Bb.

3. Ask the Ss questions, like “Can you tell me some amazing things?”

4. Show the first picture of Part A and help teach the new words using the picture: T: What can you see in the picture? S: The Sun and the Earth.

T: Which one is larger, the Sun or the Earth? S: Yes, the Sun. The Sun is about 1, 300, 000 times larger than the Earth.

5. Take turns to show the other three pictures:

There are three more sentences about amazing things. Please read them in pairs and find the new words: same, birth, stop growing. Step 3 Practice

1. Guide Ss to do exercises in Part A.

T: Today we’ll learn a lot amazing things. In Part A, you can see four pictures. Please match the pictures with the sentences. Practise reading the sentences by yourselves.

2. Ask Ss to read freely and recall sentences about amazing things. Let’s read the sentences again.

3. Let Ss be familiar with these expressions.

Close your books and let me see if you can remember the four amazing things.

Step 4 Presentation 1. Practise expressing feelings using the adjectives learnt. Now you have learnt some amazing things. How do you feel? And Write down some new adjectives: amazing, cool, funny, wonderful and interesting.

2. Play the tape about Part B and say to Ss: Kitty and Amy are talking about the fun facts in Part A. Listen to their conversation and tell me which pictures they’re talking about and what they think of the facts.

3. Ask one student: They’re talking about Pictures 1 and 4. They think they’re interesting and amazing.

4. Play the tape again and let students read after the teacher: Close your books and listen to the conversation again. Try to repeat the sentences.

5. Divide the class into halves and read the dialogue in different roles. Now the boys will role-play Kitty and the girls will role-play Amy. Let’s read the conversation together. Try not to look at the book if you can.

Step 5 Act out the Comic Strips

1. Hobo and Eddie are talking about something strange in the sky. Do you know what they’re talking about? Let’s have a look.

2. Listen to the tape and answer the questions:

What’s in the sky? Can you guess what they’re saying?

What does Hobo think it is? Does he think it’s a UFO?

3. Open the books. Repeat after the tape and check your answers at the same time.

4. Divide the class into halves and read the dialogue in different roles. Now the boys will role-play Kitty and the girls will role-play Amy. Let’s read the conversation together. Try not to look at the book if you can. Let’s act out this comic strip. Can you demostrate with me to the whole class. Work in pairs, one plays the role of Hobo and the other play as Eddie. 【设计意图：从两人对话到小组活动，由易到难，在巩固课本所学的前提下，发挥学生想象力，把故事生动形象地演绎出来。】

Step 6 Homework

1. Try to find more amazing things in the world. 2. Recite the sentences and the dialogue.
