A Teaching Plan for M4U1 Reading Content: M4U1 Reading Duration: 45m Teaching aids: computer, overhead projector

Learning objectives: By the end of the class, students will be able to: a) tell your friends basic knowledge concerning ads in an informative and well-organized way; b) apply the knowledge and reading strategy learned from the article to practical problem-solving process;

c) form your independent judgment and sharpen your critical thinking ability. Procedure: Step 1: Lead-in(5m)

Students are exposed to a number of slogans with versions of English and Chinese and are supposed to think over the following questions: a)

What do those slogans have in common in terms of language? concise + catchy + convincing + clever. b)

What message can those slogans deliver to the target audience in terms of the product? function + edge + spirit. Step2: Preview Checking (10m)

Check students’ revision in terms of basic facts of the article:

Round one a) Where can we see or hear those slogans? b) If you have no access to the media and just walk down the street, can you escape from ads? c) Can you quote sentences form the article to conclude the phenomenon?

During this round, new information concerning specific forms of ads outdoors are provided with the help of pictures and caption. Tip: Learn to stand in the shoes of the potential readers may make our piece of writing attractive. Round two a) What is an ad (your understanding as well as the writer’s definition)?

b) How persuasive can an ad be? Fun Time:

students will appreciate two successful commercials and analyze the reason why they are persuasive: They adopt a humorous or exaggerated scene with a surprise ending to show the edge of their products and leave a deep and lasting impression on the target audience.

Round Three a) What are the main types of ads? b) What are the distinctions between CAs and PSAs? Step 3 In-depth Reading (25m) Subtitle: Does an advertisement tell people the complete truth?

1

Students are expected to figure out: How does the writer prove his point? Tip: Giving examples speaks louder than a fixed “yes” or “no”, especially when the answer is not that definite. Case Study: students are expected to find out the hidden truth in some ads under the guidance of the method mentioned in the text.

Reading strategy: How to read a piece of expository writing?

Introduction of the subject (Opening para.) Supporting details (paras under subtitles) Conclusion (Closing para.) Tip: The format can be applied to either the whole article or single parts. Subtitle: Public service advertisements Case Study: students are supposed to analyze the structure under the guidance of the reading strategy. Slogan translation: Students will try to translate several slogans of PSAs back into simple but powerful Chinese, during which process, posters for those slogans will be given for appreciation. Slogan designing: students will design a slogan for their class and clarify the hidden meaning under the guidance of slogan’s features and PSAs’ characteristics.

Further discussion: students will watch a PSA and discuss: a) What is the message delivered in the PSA? b) Does it remind you of similar feelings or experiences? c) What is a successful PSA in your opinion? Step 4 Critical Thinking and Conclusion (5m) a) Do you think the conclusion is complete?

b) Can you complete the conclusion by expressing your attitude towards PSAs? Conclusion: On one hand, we should form our own judgments and treat CAs wisely since what cheats you is not the ad itself but your lack of alertness; on the other hand, we should welcome the positive energy brought by PSAs with open arms in that it is what it takes to be a responsible, trustworthy and upright citizen.
