There are a number of special days of the year that are celebrated in different countries. The origins of most of the days are unknown. They were certainly not created by individual people. Other days, however, especially those celebrated in Western countries, often owe their origins to a particular person. One of the most popular of these, even though it is fairly recent, is Mother's Day. Mothers have always been highly regarded in all cultures. The ancient Romans had a festival known as Hilario, during which children took presents to the temple of the “Mother of the Gods”. The Christian Church adopted this idea and called it Mothering Sunday. However, over the years this custom was gradually forgotten and almost disappeared by the end of the 19th century. Born in 1864 in Virginia, USA, Anna Jarvis was a school teacher and believed children should show gratitude to their mothers for all their love and care. Encouraged by a friend, she wrote to thousands of important people —politicians, churchmen, doctors, city officials—and asked them to support her idea: a special day of the year for thanking mothers.

In 1910 the Governor of West Virginia introduced Mother's Day into the state. The date chosen was May 10—the second Sunday in May, which is still observed in America today. This date was chosen because May 10 was the date on which in 1908 Anna Jarvis's mother died. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson made May 10 the official date for Mother's Day throughout the United States. Soon there was a Mother s Day International Association and the custom began to be adopted in many countries of the world. Anna Jarvis, a sad and disillusioned(失望的) woman, died in 1948. The custom she had worked so hard to establish and which had become almost universal had lost its original purpose. It had been taken over by business. As with Christmas, the giving of presents and the sending of cards had become a multi-million-dollar industry. 24.

The story is about _______. A.Mothering Sunday for Christmas B.the origin of a special day for mothers C.President Woodrow Wilson and Anna Jarvis D.how people celebrate Mother’s Day

25.Anna Jarvis wanted to __________. A.thank her mother for her care B.introduce a celebration for mothers C.meet thousands of important people D.make her pupils thank her on Mother’s Day

26.May 10 became the date for Mother s Day because _________. A.May is spring in the America B.it was the second Sunday in May in 1910 C.President Woodrow Wilson liked the date D.this was the date when Anna Jarvis's mother died

27.Unfortunately, Anna Jarvis was NOT happy with Mother’s Day when she died because _____________. A.her mother was not there to see it B.she had never been a mother herself C.people were too interested in making it a business D.no one gave any presents or cards to their mothers C Ease neck and shoulder pain at the office If you work in an office, keeping neck and shoulder pain away may only take two minutes a day. A new study presented at the World Congress of the American College of Sports Medicine in Denver found that office workers doing two minutes of exercise a day reported lower levels of neck and shoulder pain after 10 weeks. The study by Danish researchers involved 198 office workers who had frequent neck and shoulder pain but were otherwise healthy. The workers did either a 2-minute or a 12-minute resistance exercise using elastic tubing. The exercise was a lateral raise, in which the upper arm is raised until it is horizontal and the arms are 10 to 15 inches from the body, says Lars Andersen, the lead researcher. After 10 weeks, the workers who had performed two minutes of daily exercise reported on average a 1.4-point decrease in pain on a 10-point scale. Workers who did 12 minutes of daily exercise had an even lower level of pain, but the difference was not very significant. Though the study may give new encouragement to workers to add even small amounts of exercise into their daily routines, the connection between lower levels of pain and exercise is well-documented, says Lynn Miller, a professor of physical therapy at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Mich., who was not involved in the study.

Even short periods of exercise can help loosen up tight muscles and bring the body back into proper level, Miller says. Office-induced pain also can be reduced by making sure your workspace is set up properly. “For office workers, usually posture is not good," Miller says. Arms are often forward for prolonged periods, and reading a computer screen tends to bring the head into a forward position. 28.In which column of a newspaper could we find this passage? A. Entertainment. B. Sports. C. Business. D. Lifestyle. 29. According to the passage, where did the researchers come from? A. Germany. B. America. C. Denmark. D. Britain. 30. The third paragraph mainly tells us ______. A. the reason why the study was carried out B. the people who carried out the research C. how the study was carried out in detail D. how to exercise every day 31.Which of the following words best describes Lynn Miller’s attitude towards the study result?

A. Supportive. B. Negative. C. Shocked. D. Doubtful.

I left university with a good degree in English Literature, but no sense of what I wanted to do. Over the next six years, I was treading water, just trying to earn an income. I tried journalism, but I didn’t think I was any good, then finance, which I hated. Finally, I got a job as a rights assistant at a famous publisher. I loved working with books, although the job that I did was dull. I had enough savings to take a year off work, and I decided to try to satisfy a deep-down wish to write a novel. Attending a Novel Writing MA course gave me the structure I needed to write my first 55,000 words. It takes confidence to make a new start–there's a dark period in-between where you’re neither one thing nor the other. You’re out for dinner and people ask what you do, and you're too ashamed to say, “Well,I’m writing a novel, but I’m not quite sure if I’m going to get there. ” My confidence dived. Believing my novel could not be published, I put it aside.

Then I met an agent (代理商) who said I should send my novel out to agents. So, I did and,to my surprise, got some wonderful feedback. I felt a little hope that I might actually become a published writer and, after signing with an agent, I finished the second half of the novel. The next problem was finding a publisher. After two-and-a-half years of no income, just waiting and wondering, a publisher offered me a book deal–that publisher turned out to be the one I once worked for. It feels like an unbelievable stroke of luck–of fate, really. When you set out to do something different, there’s no end in sight, so to find myself in a position where I now have my own name on a contract (合同) of the publisher–to be a published writer—is unbelievably rewarding (有回报的) . 32.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 mean? A.I was waiting for good fortune

B.I was trying to find an admirable job C.I was being aimless about a suitable job D.I was doing several jobs for more pay at a time 33.The author decided to write a novel

.

A.to finish the writing course B.to realize her own dream C.to satisfy readers’ wish

D.to earn more money 34.How did the writer feel halfway with the novel? A.Disturbed B.Ashamed C.Confident D.Uncertain 35. What does the author mainly want to tell readers in the last paragraph? A.It pays to stick to one’s goal

B.Hard work can lead to success C.She feels like being unexpectedly lucky D.There is no end in sight when starting to do something 第二节
