M4 Unit 2 Reading---The Olympic Games Teaching plan 1. Teaching material:

This passage is a speech given by an IOC member which introduced the history from the

Ancient Olympic Games to the Modern Olympic Games. By learning this passage we should convey the valuable Olympic spirit to the students and encourage them to never give up in life. What’s more, this is also good teaching material to develop students’ reading and speaking ability. 2. Teaching ideas: I need to divide the whole class into six groups. First, I will lead in the topic and arouse their learning interest. Then, I will let the students skim and scan the passage to develop their reading ability. Third, we should deal with some important sentences. In the end, I need to give some comments about this class.

Teaching design 1. Teaching aims: （1）To help students get a general idea about the text；

（2）To make students familiar with detailed information about the text; （3）To improve students’ reading ability and get the students know the spirits of the

Olympic Games and use such sprit to encourage them. 2. Teaching important point: How to help the students understand the passage better and finish all the exercises. 3. Teaching difficult point: How to help the students develop their creative and comprehensive abilities

Teaching procedures Step 1

Greeting: The teacher and the students greet each other.

Step 2

Lead-in: Introduce the topic by letting students listen the song “You and me”. And arouse their learning interest by doing some quiz about the Olympic Games.

Step 3

Fast reading: Ask the students to read the article quickly and try to find the answers to the following questions and then check their answers. (1)

When did the ancient Olympic Games begin? (2)

When and Where did the contemporary Olympics first hold? (3)

What was Pierre de Coubertin’s hope when he brought Olympic Games back to life?

Step 4

Careful reading: Ask the students to read the article again and try to finish a chart about the famous athletes and then check their answers.

Step 5

Translation: Choose some important sentences in this article and ask the students to translate these sentences by working together, and then check their answers.

Homework: Ask the students to finish part C1 and part D on page 24.
