Teaching plan Reading skills in examinations —Guessing words

Deng Guilan Knowledge aims: 1.

Guide Ss to guess words and expressions while reading;

Get Ss to master some skills to guess words.

Ability aims: 1.

Help Ss develop their reading ability; 2.

Enable Ss to solve problems accordingly. Emotional aims:

1. Make Ss love to do comprehension reading; 2. Motivate Ss to study scientifically . Teaching Important Points: 1. Get Ss to guess words effectively; 2. Get Ss to highlight the reading skills. Teaching Difficult Points: 1. Get Ss to guess words according to common sense and context; 2. Develop Ss’ reading ability by daily accumulation and rich life experience. Teaching Methods:

Individual study , Cooperative learning and Discussion.

Teaching Aids: Multi-media.

Teaching Procedure:

Step 1 Lead-in Try to guess the meaning of the following words, phrases and sentences.

in fat city 1) On the way to the factory, Jack sang a pop song happily, because it is the first day for him to work. When he was working, he talked with his comrade(同志；伙伴). Suddenly, the machine broke down because of his carelessness. Jack was afraid of the blame of his boss. His comrade told him, ”take it easy, you are a green hand.”

2)A:I don't know what activity my son should take part in.

B: Many children are learning drawing, dancing, singing and so on in their spare time. You can follow suit.

A: But each child has his own interest. 3) A:To my surprise, John seems to be very unsatisfied with his wife. I think they are well-off.

高考对于猜测词义的考查要求: 考生通过构词法（word formation、阅读上下文(context)，结合中学生应有的常识(common sense)来推测尚不熟悉的词（word）、词组（phrase）或句子（sentence）的意思。The tips :

1.据定义或释义(definition)猜测词义

在对生词进行定义的时候，定义句

多为：that is (to say),

in other words,

be,

mean, deal with,

be considered to be,

refer to, be called,

be known as, define,

represent, signify等。

2.据同义词(synonyms)、反义词(antonyms)猜测

如下词常连接同义词、反义词：and, or, such as, like, for example，for instance ，contrary to，the opposite ...etc.例如：

1).Mark Twain was not the author’s real name; it was a pseudonym.

2). If you agree, write “Yes”; if you dissent, write “No”.

3.据转折关系词（turning relational words）猜测

表转折关系的词常有如

while,

however,

instead of, rather than, unlike, yet, otherwise, though, on the contrary等，例如

1).The main point of the plan is clear to me; but the details are still hazy.

2) Though Tom’s face has been washed quite clean, his neck still remains grubby.

4.据因果关系（causal relationship）猜测词义

表因果的词：because, since, as, for, due to, so, therefore, so…that, such…that, thus等，例如

1).Mary didn’t notice me when I came into the classroom, because she was completely engrossed in his reading.

2).The river is so turbid that it is impossible to see the bottom even when it is shallow. 5. 据常识（common sense）猜测

1).Rainforests like the Amazon are

important for mopping up CO2（二氧化碳）

from the atmosphere and helping to slow global warming.
