Step 1. Lead-in

As we know, we depend on energy to do many things in our daily lives . For example, energy lights our cities and heats our building .

Do you know what other things we use energy for?

Where does all this energy come from?

Make a list of things that use energy and make another list of as many sources of energy as you can. Step 2. Warming Up

This section takes a look at the role of energy in our lives, the sources and forms of this energy .It prepares students for the reading passage. Read through the exercise with the class. Put students into groups of four to talk about what we use energy for , what the sources of this energy are and whether the sources are renewable or non-renewable. Bring the class together and write three headings on the blackboard: Things that use energy

Sources of energy

Renewable / non-renewable

Elicit suggestions from students and write them under the appropriate heading.

Step 3 . Pre-reading

This section introduces students to the topic of the reading passage and the term “greenhouse gases”.

Show a picture of a greenhouse to students and ask them what a greenhouse is made of and what its purpose is .

Ask: What do you think greenhouse gases do?

Get students to look at the picture on the screen and explain it to their partner.

Step 4. Reading

The Earth Is Becoming Warmer---But Does It Matter?

The reading passage is in the form of an article from an environmental magazine for young people. It is a discussion and puts forward different points of view about the effect of increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the causes of the earth’s increased temperature and the possible effects . Ask the students to read the passage quickly and tell whether the following statements are true or false.

1. The temperature in the last century did not seem to increase much

2. Everyone believes that global warming is caused by the activities of humans. 3. Janice Foster believes that she can measure the future global rise in temperature. 4. The rise in carbon dioxide is causing a steady increase in global warming. 5. George Hambley believes that global warming will do good rather harm to the earth. 6 .It is clear what the effects of global warming will be.

Play the tape of the reading for the students to listen and read it carefully and fill in the blanks. scientists

Let students discuss the statement : We should do nothing about global warming .

Follow these instructions : 1.

Let students get into groups of four . Decide which two in their group are going to agree with the statement ( Group A ) and which two are going to disagree with the statement ( Group B ). 2.

Groups A and B get together .They tell each other the reasons of agreeing or disagreeing with the statement .

Step 5. Summary and Homework

In this period , we’ve read a passage about the Earth is becoming warmer . But does it matter ? We know we can do things to save energy and protect the environment . And we should help more people to know about the importance of saving energy and protecting environment . Besides , we’ve learnt some useful words and expressions in the passage . After class, try to make sentences with them so that you can use them freely . Blackboard design :
