Teaching Plan of Book8
Unit 3 Inventors and inventions Using Language——Alexander Graham I. Teaching aims 1) Knowledge and ability:
●To enable the Ss to know about Alexander Graham Bell and his inventions and discoveries ●To enable the Ss to grasp some reading skills, such as skimming and scanning
2) Procedures and methods:
●To help the Ss develop a method of learning through cooperation and exploration 3) Emotional attitudes and values: ●To enable the Ss to learn to make comments on scientists ●To motivate the Ss to love science and life
II. Teaching important and difficult points 1. Teaching important point:
To help the Ss know about Alexander Bell and his inventions and discoveries
2. Teaching difficult point:
To help the Ss summarize Bell’s scientific spirits and form the quality of loving science
III. Teaching methods 1. Motivating the students by using questions 2. Developing reading skills through fast reading and careful reading 3. Creating language learning situations, such as a live show, free talk etc. 4. Developing the method of solving problems through cooperation, exploration and sharing
IV. Teaching aids: multimedia, performance, experiment, etc. V. Teaching period: One period
1
Ⅵ. Teaching procedures Step1 Lead- in A live show ——
Who is still standing?
1. Aim: To review inventors and their inventions and discoveries, and at the same time introduce today’s topic, Alexander Graham Bell and his inventions and discoveries.
2. The live show ——
Who is still standing?
Form: Ask and answer questions in the form of the live show on Jiangsu TV—— Who is still standing?
Characters: the host and the hostess; two guests; two students
Activity: The host and the hostess respectively ask the two guests three questions about inventors and their inventions. If either guest gets stuck, they have one or two chances to call for help. When the hostess asks the second guest the last question——
what was Bell’s first telephone message, it’s the teacher’s turn to answer the question, and it will be used to introduce the topic of this class——Alexander Graham Bell and his inventions and discoveries.
Step2 Fast reading (Two tasks) Task1 Ask the Ss to skim the passage and find out the topic of each part.
Part1 (Para.1)
________________________ Part2 (Para.2)
________________________
Part3 (Para.3-5)
________________________ Part4 (Para.6)
________________________ Part5 (Para7)
________________________ Task2 Ask the Ss to scan the passage and find out some general information of Bell.
__________________________
Born in Scotland
When he was young
__________________________ Interested in helping the deaf, so ______________________ In 1876
__________________________ ___________________________
Discovered the tetrahedron shape ___________________________
Made his last invention 2
In 1922
Died in Canada
Step3 Careful reading (Two tasks)
Task1 Work in groups and make exploration.
Ask the Ss to work in groups of three and make exploration of the microphone, the telephone and the tetrahedron shape.
1. Divide the whole class into three groups. 2. Give each group their task as follows: Group 1: Work in small groups of ten, read the passage carefully, and answer the questions on the learning plan-----Making introductions of the microphone, the telephone and the tetrahedron shape. Group 2: Discuss in groups and find out the applications of the microphone, the telephone and the tetrahedron shape in our daily life. Group 3: Read the text carefully and conclude Bell’s scientific spirits. Task2 Exchanging and sharing
This time the three groups exchange and share their learning outcomes. Stage1. Students in Group1 make introductions Ask individual Ss in Group1 to report their answers on the learning plan while checking the answers with the whole class. Encourage and praise them appropriately. The microphone (Para.1):
●His mother: almost entirely _________
●Interested in helping deaf people ____________ and in ____________
●__________________________ his mother's forehead could make her understand.
The telephone (Para.3-5):
●Never set out to invent ____________ but to _______ the original telegraph and _______ a multiple telegraph
●Morse code: _____________tapped out along a wire ________________________ ●A machine was designed to separate ____________ and allow different conversations __________________. ●Experimented ________________________
to a deaf man’s ear drum and the other to ________________ . He spoke into the ear, the straw ____________________on the glass.
3
●A flash of ____________________: Sound waves could be sent ___________as well as in an electrical current.
●The first telephone message: _________________________________________ ▲When dealing with Bell’s first telephone message, insert the following story for the Ss to get more background information. One day when he was experimenting, H2SO4 splashed onto his leg. It was so painful that he screamed: "Mr. Watson - come here –
I want to see you." Never had he thought his common words should have been the first telephone message. That night he wrote to his father:"The day is coming when telegraph wires will be laid on to houses just like water or gas —
and friends will talk to each other without leaving home”.
▲Ask some students to act out Bell’s scream in the story to experience Bell’s feelings then and therefore stimulate their interest.
▲Also, ask the Ss to read Bell’s letter to his father. The tetrahedron shape (Para.6):
While __________________to carry a man into the air, Bell experimented ____________ ________________ and discovered the tetrahedron shape.
▲ Ask one student to show how to put triangles together to make a tetrahedron shape. Stage2. Students in Group2 talk about applications Ask the Ss in Group2 to talk about the applications of the microphone, the telephone and the tetrahedron shape. Stage3. Students in Group3 conclude Bell’s scientific spirits 1) Ask some individual Ss in Group3 to conclude Bell’s scientific spirits.
2) Ask the Ss to listen to Bell’s famous saying in Para.2 and fill in the missing information. The reason for emphasizing this paragraph is that Bell’s scientific spirits are fully reflected in it. He believed that one should always be curious and his most famous saying was:
“Leave the ____________ occasionally and _______ _______ the woods. _________ you do you will be certain to find something that you have never seen before.___________, explore all around it, and before you know it, you will have something ________________ to occupy your mind. All really big discoveries are the result of _______.”
3) Ask the Ss to read this paragraph repeatedly because it’s the teaching difficult point to 4
for the Ss summarize Bell’s scientific spirits and thus form the quality of loving science.
Step4 Free talk
Topic: If you had a chance to say something to Bell, what would you like to say most?
Ask the Ss to talk freely about what they want to say to Bell. Evaluate what they say to show approval, admiration and encouragement.
Step5 Conclusion
1. Ask the Ss to conclude what they have learnt in this class on three aspects: ● Knowledge &Information
●Methods & Abilities ●Feelings &Attitudes
2. The teacher concludes the Ss’ performance in this class, such as their learning outcomes, attitudes, ect.
Step6 Homework
Ask the Ss to explore Bell’s inventions and discoveries in his whole life. They may focus on: 1. Other inventions and discoveries. 2. Their applications. 3. Bell’s scientific spirits.
Ⅶ.Reflection and extension 1. The teacher reflects on what is done successfully and unsuccessfully in this class. 2. Think about ways to deal with and improve what is done unsuccessfully.
