Step1.Review 1.

Ask students to put the following sentences into English. (1)前天我们踢足球了。

(2)今天早晨我们计划去购物。

(3)

我妹妹五岁开始学唱歌。

2.Ask students to answer the question what they did today according to pictures.

Step2. Presentation

1.

Get students to read the following sentences and pay attention to the verbs ending in the letters -ed. (1)

They turned around. (2)

“What happened? ” Andy asked. (3)

Andy picked up the little cat. (4)

Andy wanted to help me with my English.

Invite four students to read the sentences one by one. The teacher corrects any mistaken pronunciation in time. 2.

The teacher reads the sentences aloud, then ask: When we read the verbs with -ed endings, how many ways are there to pronounce them? Help students to conclude three pronunciations //t / ,

/ d / , and / id /

Step3. Listening and practising

1.

Students listen to the tape in Part A and pay attention to the endings. Then read them aloud. 2.

Ask students to watch the last syllables of the verbs in group one, e.g. dance /s/ , help /p / , talk /k / , shop /p / .

Get students to find another two rules of pronouncing the -ed endings: -ed pronounces / d / after the voiced consonants and vowels. -ed pronounces / id / after the sounds /t / and / d / . 4.

Students practise reading the verbs in Part A again to understand and remember the rules.

Step4 . Practice 1.

Read the verbs and their simple past tense in Part B, then try to write the pronunciations of -ed endings. 2.

Play a game: find your leaders.

Write three pronunciations of -ed on the blackboard and take out a pocket with some word cards in it. These cards are some verbs ending with -ed . Divide the students in groups of three and ask them to take out one of the cards and put ou in the correct pronunciation group. The group who does the best will be the winner. 3.

Read Part C after the tape. 4.

Students practise reading the conversation in Part C, paying attention to the different pronunciations of the -ed endings. Get them to have a competition.
