I. Teaching aims and learning objectives By the end of the lesson, students should be able to: 1. know more about animals; 2. get related information from the listening materials;

3. complete a passage using the information from the listening materials; 4. learn to talk about the amazing things.

II. Teaching contents New words and phrases: snake, camel, ant, little, dry, without, 3-D, chalk, be afraid of, not … any more, hear of, the other day, at the same time

III. Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty 1. Extract information from listening to complete a thank-you letter; 2. Learn some phrases and sentence structures.

IV. Teaching procedures A

Talking about animals

Step 1 Lead-in 1. Play a guessing game.

T: Boys and girls, let’s play a guessing game. Please listen to me carefully, and guess what animal it is.

Picture 1: It is very clever. It can speak Chinese or English like a person. What is it? Picture 2: It has a long neck. The long neck helps eat leaves in the tree. What is it? Picture 3: It lives in the water. It sleeps with its eyes open. Is it amazing? What is it? Pictures 4-6: Listen to their sounds.

2. Revision.

T: We know some fun facts about elephants and goldfish. Do you still remember them? There are no bones in the back of elephants’ feet—only fat. Fish sleep with their eyes open. 【设计意图：通过听文字描述和动物的叫声，猜测老师描述的是哪种动物。复习第一课时有关动物的奇特现象，导入本课内容。】

Step 2 Presentation 1. Listening.

T: Mr Wu is showing Suzy some pictures of animals. Listen to their conversation and answer the questions. How many animals are they talking about? And what are they? 【设计意图：通过听力练习介绍四种新的动物。】

T: Listen again. Put the pictures in the correct order. Write the numbers 1-4 in the boxes.

2. Listening.

(1) Listen and answer. T: Suzy is afraid of animals. Mr Wu wants to help her. He is telling her some interesting things about animals. Listen to their conversation and answer some questions.

(2) Listen and complete the sentences.

T: Please listen again and help Suzy complete her notes.

【设计意图：通过两遍听力，完成书本A2部分练习。】

3. More fun facts about animals. 【设计意图：向学生介绍更多的有关动物的趣事，拓宽学生的知识，为后面的对话积累素材。】

Step 3 Practice 1. Make up a dialogue.

T: We have learned a lot about animals. Let’s talk about your favourite animal or the animal you are afraid of. Please make up a dialogue to show your ideas.

【设计意图：根据已有知识和所积累的素材，谈论学生喜欢或害怕的动物，说说各自的理由和动物的趣事，学会用自己的话描述动物。】

2. Finish a thank-you letter. T: Suzy is not afraid of animals now. She is writing a thank-you letter to Mr Wu. Help her finish the letter.

【设计意图：回归课文，完成书上A3部分练习。学会从听力材料中获取相关信息，并能用已掌握的信息使相关文章意思表达完整。】

Speak up: That’s really amazing! Step 1 Lead-in T: We’ve learned some fun facts about animals. The world is full of amazing things. Do you know the person? He is 2.72 metres tall. He is the tallest person in history.

Step 2 Presentation 1. Listening. (1) Listen and answer. T: The students are talking about amazing things in the world. Listen to the tape and answer the question. How many amazing people are they talking about?

(2) Listen and choose the right answer.

T: Listen again and choose the right answer.

Step 3 Practice

3. Make up your own conversation.

V. Homework 1. Find more amazing things about animals or people from the Internet; 2. Make up a similar dialogue using Part B as a model.
