Teaching procedures:

Step 1

Lead in The teacher starts the lesson by a video related to The Olympic Games in London, then ask some questions to students: T : How much do you know about Olympic Games? Ss: ......... T: How often were Olympic Games held? Ss: once every four years. T: What do the five rings mean? Ss: They mean five continents. 【设计说明】通过伦敦奥运会宣传片的视频引入话题，再由此询问学生有关奥运会的几点常识，为学生阅读课文做好铺垫。

Step 2

Pre-reading Have students answer the following questions and help them understand the passage. 1.

What is the speech about? 2.

What was Pierre de Coubertin’s hope when he brought the Olympic Games back to life? 3.

What does the speaker wish for at the end of the speech? 【设计说明】在读前阶段，设计三个与文章相关的问题，让学生通过这三个问题快速了解文章的背景知识，激发学生对本文的兴趣。具体操作手段是鼓励学生用之前学过的扫读（scanning）快速定位到关键词，得到答案。

Step 3

Reading strategies and While reading

Have students read reading strategies quickly and ask students some questions to

help them know how to read a speech. (1).What is a speech? (2). If we want to keep interested all the time, what should we do? 2. While-reading Activity1: Ask students to read the passage again and check the errors in each sentence. (1). According to the speech, the speaker is an athlete. (2). The first ancient Olympic Games were held in AD776. (3). Everyone was allowed to take part in the ancient Olympics. (4). The contemporary Olympic Games were first held in Rome in 1896. (5). At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the Chinese women’s badminton team won the gold medal for the first time in history. (6). Zhang Ning was in her late thirties when she competed in the 2008 Olympic Games. Activity2: Ask students to find some famous athletes in the speech and then finish the chart. Post-reading Ask students to have a critical thinking .

Conclusion

Show students a song of Olympic Games and then ask them to sing together. 【设计说明】用一首You and Me

来总结文章，让学生进一步理解奥运的精神，并且鼓励学生去了解更多有关于奥运会的知识。
